Clarence Dirks, son of John and Lillian Mae (Stevens) Dirks, was born on December 29, 1918 in Osceola County, Ocheydan, Iowa where he lived his youth and attended a country school in rural Allendorf, Iowa. He enlisted into the United States Navy May 22, 1942. He received his training at Great Lakes, Illinois. He served aboard the USS Wyoming in the Caribbean Sea and the USS PCS 1384. He also served at the U.S. Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. He achieved the rank of Boatswains Mate 2nd Class. He was honorably discharged November 2, 1945.

He was united in marriage to Myrtle V. Bates of Ocheyedan, Iowa on June 5, 1946 in Ocheyedan. They lived and farmed in Osceola County, rural Ocheyedan. In 1975 they started spending their winters in Casa Grande, Arizona.

Clarence was a board member for the Ocheyedan Elevator and a member and Trustee of the United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan. He was active in 4-H. Clarence did mission work in Broken Bow, Oklahoma in the late 80's with Native Americans. He also assisted at a Youth Haven Ranch in Picacho, Arizona for 10 years and at food bank in Arizona for 5 years. Clarence and Myrtle hosted 9 exchange students over the years.

Clarence will be remembered as a gentle, caring, hard working, self educated and giving man.

He passed away on Tuesday, "August 10, 1999 at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa at the age of 80 years, 7 months and 11 days.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife: Myrtle of Ocheyedan, Iowa; two daughters: Eileen Frye of Schleswig, Iowa, Twila Johnson (Don) of Yuma, Arizona; two sons: Harold Dirks (Geri) of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Charles Dirks (Ronna) of Ocheyedan, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law: Lawrence and Elnora Dirks of Ocheyedan, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter: Carol Jean; two brothers: Alvin and Wilbur.
