Lawrence Dale Dirks was born on March 23, 1927 on a farm west of Ocheyedan, Iowa. He was the son of John and Lillian (Stevens) Dirks. Lawrence lived his entire life in the Ocheyedan, Iowa area. He attended country school through the eighth grade, then attended Ocheyedan High School, graduating in 1945.

He was united in marriage to Elnora Jean Pomrenke of Ocheyedan on August 21, 1950. In January of 1951, Lawrence got his army draft notice and spent his training in Camp Atterbury, Indiana and later transferred to Germany during the Korean War. In March of 1953, Lawrence was honorably discharged. He came home and they moved on the farm south of Ocheyedan, doing livestock, crop farming and crop insurance adjusting. In 1972, they moved to the farm west of Ocheyedan, later moving into Ocheyedan. They enjoyed traveling. Lawrence liked working around the home making bird feeders for family and friends.

He was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan. He was also an active member of the Wood-Miller Legion Post # 326 in Ocheyedan, serving as Commander for several years. He enjoyed getting together with Legion Members on Saturday mornings sorting cans for different projects in the area and was active with them in the Memorial Day Services. Lawrence was very excited about going to Washington DC in 2015 for the Honor Flight.

Lawrence will be remembered as a loving and caring person who took special pride in his family.

He passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2016 at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, Iowa.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 65 years, Elnora Dirks of Ocheyedan, IA; his children, Lynn Dirks of Ocheyedan, IA, Jeffrey and Dianna Dirks of Ocheyedan, IA, Deborah and Rodney Markus of Ocheyedan, IA; four grandsons, Dustin Wingate, Travis Dirks, Jason Dirks, and Cody Dirks; nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Clarence and Myrtle Dirks, Alvin Dirks and Wilbur Dirks; one grandson, Corey Wingate.
