A War Department message which arrive early Saturday evening brought the sad news that Pvt. Alvin L. Dirks, 23 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Dirks of near Ocheyedan, had been killed in action on May 13, while fighting with the 24th Division of the U. A. Army at Mindanao. A letter had been written by Alvin on May 12, had reached his parents during the previous week, in which he told of fighting in foxholes in mud and water up to his waist and sometimes up to his neck.

Alvin L. Dirks was born July 5, 1922 and spent his childhood in the Allendorf community and attended the Allendorf school until he finished the eighth grade. He afterwards attended the Sibley High School for two years.

He entered the army June 5, 1944 at Des Moines and was sent to Camp Hood, Texas, where he received his basic training. He was then sent to Fort Ord, Calif. and about December 11, he left for oversears service. Alvin's brother, Donald Dirks, BM of the U. S. Nave, who arrived home recently from Cuba on leave to visit his parents, has been notivied of his brother's death and will arrive home shortly.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Dirks, and two brothers, Donald D. Dirks BM. of the U. S. Navy and Lawrence at home."

BM might be an abbreviation for boatswain's mate. D. A. Navorska - xiv Nov MMXXII - in proximo Grove, OK.
