Myrtle Dirks, age 85, of Ocheyedan, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at the Country View Manor in Sibley.

Memorial Services will be Monday, January 4, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Ocheyedan, Iowa. Rev. Douglas Harding and Steve Swenson officiating.

Burial at 9:30 A.M. on Monday, January 4, at the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery in Ocheyedan.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 3, 2010, from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M. with the family present from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Chapel in Ocheyedan.

Myrtle V. Dirks was born on March 3, 1924, in Palo Alto County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Fred and Minnie H. (Akkerman) Bates. She lived her youth in Osceola County, where she attended country schools and high school in Ocheyedan. She attended Teachers College at the University of Northern Iowa and graduated with a teaching degree. She taught rural schools for 5 years, and Christian education for 60 years, through church and mission work.

She was united in marriage to Clarence Dirks of Ocheyedan, Iowa, on June 5, 1946, at the Congregational Church in Ocheyedan. They lived and farmed near Ocheyedan and wintered in Arizona. Clarence passed away on August 10, 1999.

Myrtle was a member of the United Methodist Church of Ocheyedan, where she had been the Sunday School Superintendent, youth leader, worked with missions, a member of the United Methodist Women, and church secretary for 4 years. She was a 4-H leader for 14 years, and took in 9 foreign exchange students. In Arizona, she volunteered at the Youth Haven Ranch for 10 years and at the food bank.

She passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at the Country View Manor in Sibley.

Those left to cherish her memories are her children: Harold D. and Geri Dirks of Cedar Falls, IA, Twila L. and Don Johnson of Yuma, AZ, Charles D. and Ronna Dirks of Ocheyedan, IA; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchidren; one brother (her twin): Mervin John and Elnora Bates of Ocheyedan, IA; and many relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Clarence; two daughters: Carol Jean (in infancy) and Eileen Frye; two great-grandchildren: Antonio Mann and Joshua Whitson; her parents; one brother: Eugene; two sisters: Dorothy and Helen.
