1885 Census

As of 1 June 1885, Berend and Hilke lived in Turner County of the Dakota Territory. They had two children, John age 1 and Minnie age 1 month. Berend's age was 32 and Hilke's age was 22. They were both born in Prussia (Germany) as weretheir parents.

1900 Census

As of 25 June 1900, Berend E. Akkermann, age 47, had been married for 11 years to wife, Ella, age 30. Berend E. had immigrated from Germany in 1860 and was now a Naturalized Citizen. Ella was born in Iowa. Both of their respective parentswere born in Germany. Berend was a farmer who rented his farm in Baker Township, Osceola County, Iowa. He, as his wife, could read, write and speak English. Ella had had five children, all of which were living. Anna was born in SouthDakota and her younger siblings were born in Iowa.

Two children John and Hermina were also listed. It is concluded by the various sources listing these children's names, that Hermina is one and the same as Winifred since the birth month and year for Hermina, May 1885, matches the birthdate of 2 May 1885 for Winifred. One other child Edward was not listed with the family and apparently did live at home. Their mother was Helkelena, Berend's first wife.

It is noted that all the children of the first marriage plus Anna were born in South Dakota, most likely in Lennox, South Dakota. The siblings after Anna were all born in Iowa. So it is conjectured that the family moved to Iowa afterSeptember 1889. Interestingly, both Berend and Ella died in Lennox, South Dakota, and are assumed buried there. This implies that sometime after 25 June 1900 they moved back to South Dakota. Berend's Obituary confirms that they lived inIowa for "a few years".

There is a question as to when Berend's first wife died and when he married his second wife.

His obituary states that when his youngest son, which would be Edward, was seven years old his wife Hilkelnia (sic?) died. This would mean she died in 1895 which doesn't fit at all. However, if one concludes that she died when Edward wasseven months, not years, then the date of death as 12 March 1889 fits perfectly. Further his obituary states, "he quit farming and took up his residence in Lennox, staying two years with his sister, Mrs. Henry Wheelhouse. He then marriedagain, to Ella Janssen." This implies that Berend married Ella at least two years and seven months after Hilke died. This may be true since neither Berend's nor Ella's obituary indicates when they were married.

However, we do know that Edward was born on 7 August 1888, as stated in his obituary and we also know the Anna, the first child of Berend and Ella was born on 19 September 1889, as stated in her obituary. Assuming that Hilke died on 12March 1889 we find that this was only six months and 12 days prior to the birth of Anna on 13 Sep 1889 to Berend and his second wife, Ella Janssen. Either the gestation period for a child was considerable shortened in 1889 or we have aninteresting situation whereby Berend and Ella got a jump start on their family before everything was morally correct.

Brief illness fatal to early resident of Lennox, Operated harness shop at Tea. Burial will be made here (Lennox).

With the death of Berend E. Ben Akkerman which occurred this week, another early resident of the Lennox community has answered the final summons. Mr. Akkerman who enjoyed fair health despite his advanced yearscould be seen about townevery day became suddenly ill last week. His condition gradually grew worse and he slept peacefully away at 8:37 AM Wednesday morning September 27 at the lennox hospital, where he had made his home for the last 6 years. he attained theage of 86 years 7 months and 4 days.

Mr. Akkerman was born at Neermoor, Germany on February 23 1853. When he was 6 years old his parents with 3 sons and 1 daughter immigrated to America locating at Freeport, IL in November 1859. At the age of 28 he came to Lennox, DakotaTerritory following the momorable winter of 1880-81 purchasing a claim and erecting a house on his property. In March 1882 he married Hilkelnia Wheelhouse. This union was blessed with four children, one girl passing away at the age of 3months. John and Ed Akkerman of Rushmore, MN and Mrs Fred (Winifred) Bates of Echeydan, IA. When the youngest son Ed was 7 years Mr. Akkerman's wife died. Leaving him with 3 children he quit farming and took up residence in Lennox for 2years, staying with his sister Mrs. Henry Wheelhouse. He then married again to Ella Jansen. Eaight children were born to this union. She passed away a number of years ago. (Not true as she lived in Sioux Falls with her daughter until1949). The children are George of Salem, Herman of DeSmet, Ben, William, and Mike of Hartford, Mrs. Ben Gerken of Tea and Mrs. TA Hilton of Sioux Falls.

Mr. Akkerman was a continous resident of this vicinity since coming here in 1881, with the exception of a few years spent in IA. Besides his farming enterprises near Lennox, he operated a shoe shop at Tea for approximately 22 years. He issurvived by his children and two brothers Mike of George, IA and Reamt of Sibley, IA. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon from the Lennox Hospital and then at the local Presbyterian church. Burial will be made in the Lennox cemetery. Symparthy is extended the bereaved.
