Note: Jennie Hilton died Friday morning at Sioux Valley Hospital. She was just 90 years old. Jennie was born of Berend and Ella (Johnson) Akkerman on Jan. 25, 1904 near Melvin, Osceola Co., IA. When Jennie was 3 years old the family moved toSouth Dakota, lived on and worked several farms in the areas of Renner, Hartford, and Tea. Jennie attended elementary school in these rural communities. After moving to Sioux Falls, Jennie married Thomas Hilton on July 19, 1924. hepreceded her in death on Nov. 20 1945. In 1937 Jennie joined to East Side Presbyterian Church. That same year she adopted a baby girl who she named Harriet. Harriet too preceded jennie a victim of cancer in 1988.

Over her lifetime, Jennie worked at many jobs in the Sioux Falls area including John Morrell's meat packing and Creamery, cooking at the YMCA, and selling door-to-door for Grand Union and Watkins. She then became night auditor for Epplyand Sheraton Hotels in Sioux Falls and Omaha and held that position until the business was dissolved in 1972. Jennie was 68 years old at that time. She continued to earn a living after that by doing custom sewing and alterations from herhome. Health had precluded her from continuning this although special friends still received odd bits of sewing during the last couple of years.

Jennie is preceded in death by her husband, Tom; her daughter Harriet; 5 brothers; 1 sister; and an infant grandson, David Alen Fennig who died on a military base, Morocco, Africa in 1960. She is survived by 2 grandsons, Craig F. Fennigand Mrak R. Fennig and a granddaughter Cynthia M Fennig, all of Minneapolis and 3 greatgrandsons. Also surviving are a host of Nieces and nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews; and many old friends. memorials should be directed to the East Side Presbyterian Church.
