"John, Jr. and Anna (Eisenhauer) Abels

John Abels, Sr. was born August 4, 1890 at Nieuweschans, Groningen, Holland. He spent his boyhood there. He married Johanna Meyering at Bellingvolede, Holland and established their home; John Jr. was born there. John, Sr.'s father(Opa) came to the U.S. first and two years later, in 1913, John, Sr. followed them to Kamrar, Iowa, but Johanna (Oma) would not go unless her brother, Jerry would come too. (See Heiko Meyering article.) The Henry Dontje's, who came tothe U.S. with them, moved from Kamrar to Buffalo Center first and liked the area and told the Meyerings, so in 1918 they aloso moved to the George Johnson farm (where Hank Dohlman lives). Two years later, in 1920, John and Johanna andchildren John, Jr., Joe, Jennie, and Edward moved on another George Johnson farm (where Dave Abels lives now) and they farmed there. They retired in 1948 and John, Sr. passed away at age 62. Johanna was the daughter of John andEverdeana Meyering and was born November 10, 1889. Her sisters were Yerena and Trena (Skilbred), and brothers were Ben, Jerry, Tony, John, Henry, and Heiko.

John Abels, Jr. was born November 4, 1911 in Bellingvolde, Holland and emigrated with his parents in 1913. In 1927 John was 16 years old and was plowing with six horses pulling a gang plow and hit a rock and it threw him off, breakinghis arm. Mrs. Albert Dirksen saw him and took him home. He had to pick corn with a broken arm and also planted with his leg in a cast up to his hip. They had to work hard.

John met Anna Eisenhauer when the young ladies and fellows went to town on Saturday nights and when Anna was working in a church stand. They were married on February 25, 1935. Anna was born February 24, 1915. Anna worked out byhousekeeping in homes. anna was the daughter of August and Helen (Berschman) Eisenhauer and was born at Germania (now Lakota). Anna's sisters were Cora (Abels), Velma, Dorothy (Caltverdt) and brothers were Harold and John.

had to wash it all the time. She attended high school in Buffalo Center.

Anna's father (August Eisenhauer) was born April 15, 1889 in Norden, Germany. At the age of 23 he came to America to visit and liked this area, so he stayed with his uncle, Albertus Furst. He had leared the barger trade in Germany andwas employed by Charlie Lewis as a barber in Germania (now Lakota). Later he purchased the Lewis Barber Shop. In December 1914 he married Helen Berschman and they lived there until 1920. They moved by train and Alfred Yahnke pickedthem up with horses and sled. Alfred Yahnke was a neighbor to wheey they were moving to (the Con Berschman farm). They started farming and continued until they retired in 1950. Helen Berschman was born February 2, 1893 and passed away at age 82.

John and Ann's children were Shirley (Hagenson), Doris (Heyes), Carol (Mitchell), Janet (who was killed in a auto accident at the age of 18), Ron, Marlene (Woodburn), and four children died in infancy. They lived on a farm northeast ofBuffalo Center until 1976 when they moved to Buffalo Center.

Besides their love for farming, they loved to travel and took their family on many vacations. In those days a lot of visiting was done with the neighbors. They were faithful attenders of the Congregational Church where Ann taught Sundayschool for many years. John also served on the Farmers Co-op Elevator board and church board. John passed away in 1983."

"John Abels, 72

Funeral services for John Abels, 72, of Buffalo Center were held Monday morning, December 19 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center with clergymen Rev. Steven Oeffling and Rev. Avery Wetzig officiating. Winter Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements and interment was in Olena Mound Cemetery. Mr. Abels passed away Friday, December 16 at the age of 72 years, one month and 12 days at a Rochester, Minnesota hospital.

Casketbearers were Larry Heyes, Kim Davids, Rodney Wubben, Jeff Doyle, Dave Abels, Donald Abels, Alvin Smidt and Jerry Hejna. Honorary casketbearers were Zachary Woodburn, Aaron Woodburn, Matthew Abels and Dustin Abels. Kathi Nelson wasthe organist and Connie Berg was the soloist.

John Abels, son of John and Johanna (Meyering) Abels, was born November 4, 1911 in Bellingvolde, Holland. He immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1913 and located at Kamrar, Iowa until 1920 when the family moved to a farm near Buffalo Center.

On February 25, 1935 he was united in marriage to Anna Eisenhauer. He joined the First Congregational Church of Buffalo Center on March 28, 1937. He farmed near Buffalo Center until 1976 when he retired and moved to town.

"deacon and as a trustee, served on the coop elevator board, traveling, and family related activities.

He is survived by his wife, Anna; four daughters, and one son, Mrs. Keith (Shirley) Hagenson of Buffalo Center, Mrs. Richard (Doris) Heyes of Lakota, Mrs. Dan (Carol) Mitchell of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, and Mrs. Tim (Marlene) Woodburn of Buffalo Center and Ronald Abels of Thompson; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joe of Buffalo Center and Edward of Bonduel, Wisconsin; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Janet; two infant children and a set of infant twins, and one sister, Jennie."
