"Accident On, Rural Gravel Road Saturday
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 1, at 1:30 p.m. for Janice Elaine Abels, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Abels who live on a farm northeast of Buffalo Center. Miss Abels,-18, was killed instantly in a one-car crash on acountry road Saturday night, October 29. She was a member of the senior class at Buffalo Center Community School.
Miss Abels had left her parents' farm home shortly before seven o'clock with Sharon, Rodney, Bruce and Steven Eisenhauer and Kermith Balvance with her in the car to take them to the Harold Eisenhauer farmstead. The two families were inthe process of picking corn together and had just completed moving machinery to the Abels farm.
The mishap occurred as she was returning to her home. Her car, a 1965 Oldsmobile, skidded on the gravel road south of the Les Feldick farm as she was traveling in a southerly direction. The car came to a stop in the ditch on the eastside of the road, anding on its top and facing north.
Ben Hall of Buffalo Center discovered the accident as he was driving to the Les Feldick farm. After checking the car, he sped to the Feldick home and summoned Dr. Harley Feldick to the scene. The physician's examination revealed deathwas apparently instantaneous due to multiple injuries about the head and neck.
Winter Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements at the First Congregational Church with Rev. Avery Wetzig officiating Pallbearers were Stanley Abels, Donald Abels, Rodney Eisenhauer, Alvin Smidt, Roger Riebsamen and Kermith Balvance.Rodney Wetzig was soloist. Burial was in Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center.
Janet Elaine Abels was born to John Abels and Anna Eisenhauer Abels September 30, 1948 at Mason City, Iowa. She passed from this life in a car accident October 29, 1966 at the age of eighteen years and twenty-nine days.
Janet lived all of her life in the Buffalo Center area where she was a senior at the Buffalo Center High School. While in school she enjoyed participation in the Future Nurses association, Girl's Recreation Association, and was a memberof the Pep Club, attended the First Congregational Church of Buffalo Cener where she was active in the Youth Fellowship and the King's Daughters organization, and taught in the Vacation Bible school for the past two years, Janet madeprofession of her faith in Christ as her Saviour at the age of eleven at the Great Lakes Bible Camp on Lake Okoboji. Janet enjoyed life, especially the things of nature and working with the little children.
Janet was preceded in death by two infant brothers and two infant sisters. She leaves to mourn her passing her father and mother, one brother, Ronnie and a sister, Marlene at home, Carol of Garner, Iowa, Mrs. Shirley Hagenson of BuffaloCenter and Mrs. Doris Heyes of Lakota. Five nieces and nephews, her two grandmothers, Mrs. John Abels, Sr. and Mrs. August Eisenhauer of Buffalo Center; several cousins, uncles, aunts and many friends." <>
