John Abels, Sr. was born August 4, 1890 at Nieuweschans, Groningen, Holland. He spent his boyhood there. He married Johanna Meyering at Bellingvolede, Holland and established their home; John Jr. was born there. John, Sr.'s father(Opa) came to the U.S. first and two years later, in 1913, John, Sr. followed them to Kamrar, Iowa, but Johanna (Oma) would not go unless her brother, Jerry would come too. (See Heiko Meyering article.) The Henry Dontje's, who came tothe U.S. with them, moved from Kamrar to Buffalo Center first and liked the area and told the Meyerings, so in 1918 they aloso moved to the George Johnson farm (where Hank Dohlman lives). Two years later, in 1920, John and Johanna andchildren John, Jr., Joe, Jennie, and Edward moved on another George Johnson farm (where Dave Abels lives now) and they farmed there. "Rites Held For John Abels, Sr.
Funeral services for John Abels, Sr., were held Friday afternoon, July 3 at the home followed with services in the First Congregational church with the pastor, Rev. John D. Engels in charge. Interment was in Olena Mound Cemetery.
John Abels, Sr., son of John and Jennie Abels, was born August 4, 1890, at Nieuweschans, Groningen, Holland. It was here that he spent his boyhood and grew to young manhood. On June 3, 1911, he was united in marriage to Johanna Meyeringat Bellingwolde, Holland, and here the young couple established their home. Two years later, in 1913, they immigrated to this country and located at Kamrar, Iowa, where Mr. Abels continued to follow his occupation of farming. In 1920 thefamily moved on a farm near Buffalo Center where"

"they made their home until five years ago when Mr. Abels retired from the farm, and they moved to their present home in the east part of town. Their home was blest with four children three sons and one daughter.
Our departed brother first became noticeably ill just last March when it was necessary for him to submit to surgery both in the local hospital and also in Iowa City. His health continued to fail, and during the past few months he hadundergone treatment in Iowa City several times, and also hospitalized in Buffalo Center. In the past few weeks his condition became more acute, he suffered much pain, and for the last Jwo weeks was confined to his bed. Everythingpossible was done for him as the best of medical skill was sought to help him in his courageous fight to regain his health. Loving hands ministered unto him daily in seeking to alleviate his suffering, which he bore uncomplainingly andwith great patience.
In the last days of his illness, our brother had longed and sought earnestly that the Lord would take him to, his eternal"
[Col. 4]
"Home, and on Tuesday evening June 30, 1953, at 7:30 o'clock, he passed away very peacefully at his home, and entered the rest that God hast prepared for His people. He had reached the age of 62 years, 10 months and 26 days.
Mr. Abels united with the First Congregational Church of Buffalo Center on March 28, 1937. During his illness our departed brother always greatly appreciated the pastor's calls, and found great comfort and strength in the spiritualministry of the Word of God. His was a radiant and living faith, as he rested his hope upon the never failing promises of God. He - did not question God's wisdom nor doubt His faithful ness in His dealing with him, but submitted humblyto Devine Sovereignty.
Throughout his life Mr. Abels was a tireless and energetic worker. He took great pride in his work and always took a great interest in farming, which occupation he had followed all his life. He was a devoted husband and father, onegreatly endeared to his family, and the loss will be deeply felt." <>
