In December 1914 he married Helen Berschman and they lived there until 1920. They moved by train and Alfred Yahnke picked them up with horses and sled. Alfred Yahnke was a neighbor to wheey they were moving to (the Con Berschman farm). They started farming and continued until they retired in 1950. Helen Berschman was born February 2, 1893 and passed away at age 82.

Besides their love for farming, they loved to travel and took their family on many vacations. In those days a lot of visiting was done with the neighbors. They were faithful attenders of the Congregational Church where Ann taught Sundayschool for many years. John also served on the Farmers Co-op Elevator board and church board.
