"THE BERSCHMAN FAMILY
John Diedrick Berschman was born March 2, 1861 at Pewsum, Ostfriesland, Germany. When he was twenty he immigrated to Parkersburg and Grundy Center, Iowa. Many of our Buffalo Center people first came to look at the dark, rich loam where their new llives were to begin in this new land.
In 1884 he married Cornelia Garrels, a servant for a Mason City lawyer, and moved to the community of Germania (Lakota) to the Jasper Smidt farm. They had four daughters: Mrs. H. J. Kline (Sandy Bashan's grandmother), Johanna (who stayed single), Della Everding; Helen Eisenhauer (Ann Abels, Cora Abels, Harold, Jack, Velma and Dorothy Caltvedt's mother), and two sons. Heyo (Ruth Clapper, Kay Newel, twin sons, Joe and John - who is my father). The other son, Cornelius, was the father of Alice (Barkhurst), Evelyn (Esterich), Elaine (Albertson), and Katherine (Behrends).
In 1927 the community of Buffalo Center was shocked to learn that Mrs. Cornelia Berschman had taken her own live by hanging herself in the driveway of the grainary and corncrib on their farm about three miles northeast of Buffalo Center (now farmed by Jim Shortenhaus). Dr. Dolmage was summoned, but all her vital signs were gone. Financial worried over considerable large land acquisitions the family had made seemed to be the main factor in the tragedy. ..."

"DESPONDENT OVER FINANCIAL AFFAIRS TAKES LIFE
News of the death of Mrs. John Berschman, living four miles northeast of Buffalo Center, by her own hand, [wrought] grief to the hearts of her relatives and friends. Despondent over financial affairs, Mrs. Berschman is believed to have become temporarily insane and took her life by hanging Friday forenoon, April 1st in a granary on their farm.
Mrs. Cornelia Berscman, nee Gar[rels], was born November 13, 1861, at [...] East Friesland, Gerrmany. She came to America in 1882 and located in Grundy County, Iowa. Two years later she was united in marriage with [John] Berschman. This union was blessed with six children, two sons and [four] daughters. After living ten years in Grundy Center, the, family moved to Kossuth and Winnebago counties. For a goodly number of years they lived on a farm near Lakota, and five years ago removed to the place northeast of Buffalo Center, known as the [Fr]iesenberg farm, where the family now reside. Mrs. Berschman was a hard working woman, a devoted wife and mother, and why such a calamity as this should be permitted is hard to understand. At the time of her death she was 65 years; 4 months and [...] days. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, two sons, Heyo of Lakota, Cornelius at home and four daughters, Mrs. Henry Kline also of Lakota, Mrs. Aug. Eisenhauer of thiis neighborhood, Johannah and [Della] at lome. She is also survived by one [sis]ter, Mrs. J. DeHaan of Rock Rapids, Iowa.
The funeral took place Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Reformed church conducted by Rev. J. H. Schoon in German and Rev. Ales Russell in English. There was much evidence of sympathy and sorrow and although the climatic conditions were bad the church was full of sympathizing friends. Interment was made in Graceland cemetery.
May the Almighty, who is a comforting in times of tribulation, also be a consolation to this family in their sorrow and bereavement.
The following from out-of-town were in attendance at the funeral: Mrs. J. DeHaan of Rock Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. Martin Freeks and Mrs. Louis Hilibrandt of George, Iowa, and a large [...mcourse] of friends from Lakota where the family formerly lived."
Note: her obituary names the town in Ostfriesland where Cornelia was born. The on-line display of the page hides the name in the binding. A Lakota Record obit. provides the town of Emden.
