John Diedrick Berschman was born March 2, 1861 at Pewsum, Ostfriesland, Germany. When he was twenty he immigrated to Parkersburg and Grundy Center, Iowa. Many of our Buffalo Center people first came to look at the dark, rich loam wheretheir new llives were to begin in this new land.
In 1884 he married Cornelia Garrels, a servant for a Mason City lawyer, and moved to the community of Germania (Lakota) to the Jasper Smidt farm. ..." <>

John Diedrick Berschman was born March 2, 1861 at Pewsum, Ostfriesland, Germany. When he was twenty he immigrated to Parkersburg and Grundy Center, Iowa. Many of our Buffalo Center people first came to look at the dark, rich loam where their new llives were to begin in this new land.
In 1884 he married Cornelia Garrels, a servant for a Mason City lawyer, and moved to the community of Germania (Lakota) to the Jasper Smidt farm. They had four daughters: Mrs. H. J. Kline (Sandy Bashan's grandmother), Johanna (wo stayedsingle), Della Everding; Helen Eisenhauer (Ann Abels, Cora Abels, Harold, Jack, Velma and Dorothy Caltvedt's mother), and two sons. Heyo (Ruth Clapper, Kay Newel, twin sons, Joe and John - who is my father). The other son, Cornelius, was the father of Alice (Barkhurst), Evelyn (Esterich), Elaine (Albertson), and Katherine (Behrends).
In 1927 the community of Buffalo Center was shocked to learn that Mrs. Cornelia Berschman had taken her own live by hanging herself in the driveway of the grainary and corncrib on their farm about three miles northeast of Buffalo Center(now farmed by Jim Shortenhaus). Dr. Dolmage was summoned, but all her vital signs were gone. Financial worried over consideragle large land acquisitions the family had made seemed to be the main factor in the tragedy. ..."

"Final Rites Held For John Berschman
John Diedrick Berschman, a long time resident of Lakota, Iowa, and well known to many here passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Klein at Blue Earth, Minnesota on November 29, 1948, after reaching the age of 87 years, 8 months and 27 days.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, December 1, 1948, at St. Paul's Lutheran church at Lakota with Pastor Fred F. Darnauer officiating. Interment was in Olena Mound cemetery at Buffalo Center, Iowa.
Mrs. Lou Meyer, accompanied by her daughter, Marilyn, sang: "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Rock of Ages." Pallbearers were John Berschman, Harold Eisenhauer, Joe Abels, John Abels, Joe Berschman and John D. Eisenhauer.
Grandad John Diederick Berschman was born March 2, 1948 at Pewsum (Pefsum) Ostfrieszland Germany.
In infancy his life Was dedicated to the Lord in the sacrament of Holy Baptism. Following his elementary instruction in the principles of Christian Faith and Life he renewed his baptismal vows in the rite of Lutheran confirmation.
Grandpa Berschman grew to manhood in his native land. In the year 1881 at the age of 20 he came to the United States and spent his early years in this country in Grundy county in the communities of Parkersburg and Grundy Center.
In 1884 he was united in wedlock with Cornelia Garrels. Their union was blessed with six children: two sons and four daughters.
They lived on a farm in Grundy county for a number of years.
In 1892 they came to Kossuth county and located on a farm southeast of Germania. Here they spent the greater part of their active life, reared their family and enjoyed the respect and goodwill of their neighbors and friends.
Mrs. Berschman preceded him in death on April 1, 1927 and a daughter, Johanna passed away on January 4, 1944. Following the death of Mrs. Berschman, he together with his son, Cornelius and daughter, Delia, occupied'the home place. Thenfor a number of years he made his home with his daughter, Delia, at Crystal Lake. Since 1942 he has made his home with his daughter, Ella in Lakota and at Blue Earth, where he was called to rest last Monday morning at 10:20, November 29,1948. He attained the age of 87 years, 8 months and 27 days.
He is survived by three daughters: Ella, Mrs. Henry Klein of Blue Earth, Minnesota; Helen, Mrs. August Eisenhauer of Buffalo Center and Delia, Mrs. Andrew Everding of Crystal Lake; and by two sons: Cornelius of Buffalo Center and Heyo ofLakota. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 19 greatgrand children and a host of relatives and friends.
