Services Held Monday For Fred E. Bruns, 81

Funeral services for Fred E. Bruns, 81, retired Titonka area farmer, were held Monday afternoon, May 8 in Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Titonka, with the Rev. Roger Hanson officiatinng. Burial was in the church cemetery with militaryrites conducted by the American Legion, Breen Post No. 465. Blake Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Serving as casket attendants were his nephews, Franklin Schutter, Morris Isebrand, LeRoy Bruns, Vernon Schutter, Raymond Franzen and Frank Ullmann. Honorary casket attendants were George Heyer, Howard Andrews, William Peterson, Ever Postand Dwight Graham.

Fred Bruns was born May 8, 1891 at German Valley, north of Titonka, the son of Heiko and Margaretha Frerichs Bruns He married Tena Franzen on February 24, 1921 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, and the couple farmed near there until hisretirement in 1947.

He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion.

Mr. Bruns died Thursday morning, May 4 of an apparent heart attack at his home.

He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Elmer (Marjorie) Boyken of Buffalo Center; one brother, Heiko Bruns of Titonka; three sisters, Mrs. Herman (Johanna) Franzen, Mrs. John (Martha) Schutter and Mrs. Stephen (Flora) Tjaden, allof Titonka; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. ..."

HEIKO BRUNS, SR., son of Henry F. Bruns and Jana (Flesher) Bruns was born October 11, 1856 at Oldenburg Germany. He came to America in 1870 with his family and settled at Freeport, Illinois. Shortly after this time, he moved to GrundyCenter, Iowa.

MARGARETHA ELISABETH FRERICHS, daughter of Fred and Etta (Weers) Frerichs, was born on September 26, 1886 in German Township, Grundy County, then moved to German Township, Kossuth County.* Heiko bought land for $6.20 per acre in 1882,the farm where his grandson, LeRoy Bruns now resides. At the time of his arrival in the Titonka area the land was all prairie and few trees were to be seen. The nearest rail-"

"road station was at Wesley. He hauled grain there with horses for ifteen cents a bushel. That was a day's journey. It cost him fifteen cents to feed the horses and himself for a day.

They were the parents of nine children: Henry H.; Etta (John) Fahrenholtz; Fred; Ewald; Johanna (Herman) Franzen; Martha (John) Schutter; Flora (Stephen Tjaden; Heiko, Jr.; a daughter, Etta, who died in infancy. ... FRED and Tena Bruns, parents of a daughter Margie Boyken, and two sons, Frederick and Leonard, who died in infancy. ... Margaretha died during the flu epidemic on January 14, 1919. Her son, Fred was en route home from France, after serving in World War I, at the time of his mother's death. Heiko, Sr. remained on the farm until 1924 when he retired toTitonka. He resided in what is now the Bill Hamilton home. He died on May 11, 1928.

They were faithful members of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Titonka, Iowa.
