"De Groot, Chris, Jr. - Lena Ackerman
Chris was the son of Chris, Sr. and Hendericka (Reka) Willemssen DeGroot and he married Lena, the daughter of Mike and Mary Hassebroek Ackerman. The couple farmed near Sibley for awhile and then moved to a farm east of George. Theymoved into town where Chris did carpentry work and ran a maintainer for Lyon County.
Their children were Harold (m. Wilda Moreland), Evelyn (m. Homer Grotewold, Jr.), Gladys (m. Ted Ver Doorn) and Dorothy (m. Carroll Ver Hoef and later Willard Van Hoorn).
A tragic car accident took the life of Chris and Dorothy in 1950 and Lena then adopted and raised granddaughter, Susan Ver Hoef, as her own child.
Evelyn was a business woman in George for many years and she took a very active part in community affairs.
Lena lived to be well over 100 years old and the Ackerman family she was from was noted for their longevity.
The family attended the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church."
