"... Fern Maxine Garver Sex: F Birth: 27 JUL 1924 in Arthur Twp, Clare Co, MI

Note:

Fern went to Ann Arbor, MI at age four for surgery that left her face slightly disfigured as she grew older. She started working at age 13, taking care of her neighbors' children--working for five different neighbors from age 13-17, and even learning to bake bread. At age 17 she moved to Ypsilanti and got an upstairs apartment in the home of Clyde Haft's sister (Clyde later married her sister Virginia). She worked at a grocery store the first year, then for a bomberplant, taking the food wagon throughout the plant at lunchtime. After being laid off from that job, she went to beauty school at age 19, living with her younger sister Donna in the apartment in Ypsilanti. While there she was marriedbriefly and had a son, Larry. Later she moved home and worked at a manufacturing plant and then as a beautician, and her parents helped her raise Larry until she married Floyd Squires, who adopted him. (This was Floyd's second marriage.) She and Floyd were married at her parents' home. Fern suffered from Parkinson's Disease as she grew older, as did her brother Charles.
