Note:

Charles married Emma Heilman in 1889. At first they lived in Washington Township, Defiance Co, OH, where their first child, Walter Edward, was born. From there they moved to an 80-acre farm in Mark Township, Defiance Co, OH, where theyhad five more children. In November 1902 they left Mark Township and bought land in the Browns Corner area of Michigan, in Kaykakee County (later renamed Clare County). They made the move by train--the entire family and their possessions, including their livestock. The reason for the move to Michigan was to obtain cheaper land. Their last three children, Beatrice, Roy, and Alta, were born in Michigan. They settled in Arthur Township on a 40-acre farm, buying 20 more acresless than a year later. (In 1903, Emma's widowed sister, Ellen, bought the 44-acre farm to the west of their farm. She brought her youngest four children, but left her oldest, Mary, age 12, with her late husband Thomas' sister Rachel.)Charles died in 1931. Emma tried to keep the farm going after his death, but it was given over to their son Walter before long. Charles and his wife are buried at Cherry Grove Cemetery, Clare Co, MI.

Notes from Dale Garver; More than a farmer, Charles, "Charlie" to his friends, also served as moderator of the local school district. He played the fiddle at square dances along with son Ray on guitar or zither. Charles valued his livestock and took good care ofthem. Workhorses always got their hour-long rest at noon, and never worked after supper. In the evening he would sit back and read the Clare Sentinel, often dozing off while doing so. He and Emma often spoke German when discussing thingsthey didn't want the children to hear, but after WWI they ceased this practice. Their daughter Alta wanted to learn German, but Emma wouldn't allow it.
