OBITUARY: GRACE LIEUWEN BARKEMA, Grace Lieuwen, nee Lieuwen, was born Nov. 9, 1897, in Iowa Township, Wright County, IA, and died at one o'clock Monday morning, August 26, 1929, at the Lutheran Hospital, Hampton, IA where she was takenthe evening before. ... On November 2, 1915, she was united in marriage to Hauko Barkema, who survives her with seven children, five boys and two girls, namely, Theodore, ..."

Theodore Hauko Barkema, 74, Grinnell, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 1990, at Grinnell General Hospital.

Born March 3, 1916, in Meservey, he was the son of Hauko and Grace Lieuwen Barkema. He married Alice Figland McCammant Aug. 30, 1949, in Garner. She died June 26, 1989.

He was raised on a farm near Goodell while attending the Meservey School district. In 1930 he moved to Grinnell to work as a farmhand. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 48th Engineer Battalion in the EuropeanTheater. Following his discharge, he worked as a farmhand near Grinnell and then worked at the One Minute Factory in Kellogg. He also worked for York Lumber Yard and Vosburg's, formerly Richardson's, until retiring in 1978. He was amember of the Grinnell American Legion Focht-Tennant Post No. 53, and the Grinnell Eagles.

Surviving are three daughters, Joyce A. Eilander, Albia, and Janet LaRae McCammant and Judy Marie McCammant, both of Burlington; his stepmother, Nellie Barkema, Belmond; four brothers, Harvey Barkema, Forrest City, Mervin Barkema, Klemme,Leo Barkema, Mason City, and Bud Barkema, Belmond; two sisters, Marvel Stadtlander, Sheffield, and Jean Ostendorf, Klemme; one stepsister, Arlene Swenson, Detroit, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.

The service for Mr. Barkema was held Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Bruce W. Fuerbach officiating.

Burial was in Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma.
