BIRTH DEATH MARRIAGE: Information from family members, obituary.

BURIAL - Meservey, Ia. Reformed cemetery, she died from childbirth and the baby and Grace were buried together in the casket. OBITUARY: GRACE LIEUWEN BARKEMA, Grace Lieuwen, nee Lieuwen, was born Nov. 9, 1897, in Iowa Township, Wright County, IA, and died at one o'clock Monday morning, August 26, 1929, at the Lutheran Hospital, Hampton, IA where she was takenthe evening before. All that loving hands and surgical skill could perform and surgical skill could perform was done to spare her life, but all of no avail. She lived to be 31 years ten months and 17 days.

On November 2, 1915, she was united in marriage to Hauko Barkema, who survives her with seven children, five boys and two girls, namely, Theodore, Harvey, Mervin, Leo, Marvel, Leland, and Jean. She was a devoted wife and mother, the tiesof earth were dear and she fain would have remained where seemingly she cannot be spared, but the Lord God had willed otherwise.

The departed has lived all her life in this vicinity. After having lived for one year on a farm one and half miles southwest of Meservey, the family moved to the farm 3 miles east of Goodell where they have lived ever since.

She leaves besider her mourning husband and children her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Teeke T. Lieuwen, three brothers, George, Bert and Donald, 7 sisters, Nellie Dorenkamp (Jim), Rose, Helen, Mourine, Mabel, Mary, and Margaret,besides many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 28 at 1 o'clock at the house and from there to the Reformed church at Meservey. Burial was made in the Meservey cemetery. [copy]

Mrs. Hauko Barkema, who resided about three miles east of Goodell was taken ill at 7 o'clock Sunday evening and was rushed to the hospital at Hampton where she passed away at 11 o'clock. The tiny flower for whom Mrs. Barkema sacrificed her life, is also at rest with the mother.

Grace Leiuwen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. T. Leiuwen, who also reside on a farm east of Goodell, was one of a family of seven children. At the time of her death she had reached the age of thirty-two years.

Fourteen years ago she was united in marriage with Hauko Barkema and the bereaved husband and seven children are left to mourn the passing of a kind and loving mother. The children are, Theodore, Harvey, Marvin, Leo, Marvel, Leland and Jean.

Besides the parents she is also survived by ten brothers and sisters. They are George and Donald at home; Bert at Mason City; and Nellie, now Mrs. Jim Dorenkamp of Belmond; and Rose, Helen, Maurine, Mabel, Mary and Margaret at home.

Funeral services were held at the home at 1 o'clock this afternoom and at the German Reformed church at Meservey immediately upon the arrival of the procession. Burial was made in the cemetery there."
