Oloff (“Uncle” vir sy neefs en niggies) is gebore op 13.12.1907 en het nooit getrou nie. Hy was 37 jaar lank (1937-1968) onderwyser (Duits) by Gimnasium in die Paarl. Hy was ‘n merkwaardige man, sy tyd in baie opsigte vooruit: intelligent (hy het sy grade aan die Universiteit van Kaapstad almal met onderskeiding behaal en het in 1930 die Alexander von Humboldt toekenning vir studie in diebuiteland ontvang), kunstig met sy hande (hy het graag geskilder en sy huis versier), lief vir oordadige Italiaanse tipe versierings in rooi en goud, baie berese, spitsvondig, was hy ‘n onderhoudende gespreksgenoot en baie in aanvraag as seremoniemeester en gasspreker by geleenthede. Geen heilige koeie het ooit sy skerp humor ontduik nie: ouderdom, die dood, godsdiens, alles het deurgeloop. Hy was lief vir kinders, het graag met hulle gesels en het die wereld vir baie van sy leerlinge oopgemaak met sy vertellinge, al kon hy soms taamlik los met die feite omgaan as dit die storie interessanter en meer persoonlik kon maak!

Tragies vir so ‘n lewendige kleurvolle mens, het hy het sy laaste jare in die siekeboeg van Huis Vergenoegd in die Paarl deurgebring, waar hy na meer as een beroerte later nie meer kon praat nie en in Augustus 1999 op 91-jarige leeftyd oorlede is.Sy as is in ‘n urn op sy ouers se graf in die Hofstraat Kerkhof in die Paarl geplaas. Miskien moes ons tog maar ‘n ou kwinkslag van hom as inskripsie gebruik het: Heaven for comfort, but Hell forcompany!
