Joën ging, net als zijn broers reeds op veertienjarig leeftijd op de mijn werken, hij werd echter reeds op middelbare leeftijd arbeidsongeschikt, daar hij leed aan een ernstige vorm van Silicose. Op 01-10-1971 ging hij reeds officieel met pensioen.Later zou hij sterven aan de gevolgen van deze mijnwerkersziekte.
