    Alvorens hij op 16-05-1914 in dienst trad van de Staatsmijnen (Emma), had hij reeds al als mijnwerker gewerkt op de mijn Laura en Vereeniging. Op de Emma werkte hij eerst onder werknummer 671 en later onder nummer 8443. uit zijn personeelsdossier blijkt dat Math in de periode 1924 - 1939 vijf maal een overtreding had begaan, dat hij ten gevolge van 4 ziektegevallen 97 dagen ziek gemeld was en daarnaast nog 46 dagen afwezig geweest ten gevolge van 3 mijnongevallen. Math bleef tot aan zijn pensionering in 1946 op de Emma werken. Zijn beoordeling als werknemer was goed.

Notes about Jan Mathijs "Math" Gerits

Math werd met een lengte van 1 m 63 goedgekeurd voor de nationale militie. Na zijn huwelijk vestigde hij zich aanvankelijk in Schaesberg; hier werden de twee oudste kinderen geboren. In 1919 vertrok hij met zijn gezin naar Weustenrade, al waar de jongste vier kinderen geboren werden. In 1934 vertrok het gezin naar de Schurenberg, waar ze gingen wonen in het ouderlijke huis van Math. Naast zijn werk als mijnwerker runde hij op de Schurenberg een klein landbouwbedrijfje. Zo had hij een stukje grond op het hoogste punt van de Schurenberg, in de volksmonde werd dit "op d'r knup" genoemd, en bewerkte daar diverse grondstukken die eigendom waren van zijn oudste broer Joësep. Daar bestond de opbrengst vooral uit aardappelen en granen; de granen werden weer als voer voor de varkens gebruikt. Op 01 maart 1946 werd hij afgekeurd vanwege zijn slechte longen en ging hij met ouderdomspensioen; door toedoen en volharden van dr. Starmans uit Nuth werd uiteindelijk erkend dat het mijnwerk de oorzaak van zijn slechte longen was, zodat hij een hoger invaliditeitspensioen kreeg.
