Geleerd smid; ging echter al snel met zijn vader, schoonvader Jan Gabriël Mertens en de schoonbroers Math en Huub Mertens werken op de 'Notstern", in de volksmond beter bekend als Roeë Erd' (een steenfabriek en ijzergieterij in Kohlscheid bij Aken) om brikken te bakken. Daartoe verzamelden ze dan rond vijf uur 's-morgens bij de Köppesmuële op de Rennemig met nog een man of acht uit Heerlerheide en vertrokken naar Duitsland. Toen ze daar begonnen, moesten ze er te voet naartoe. Daartoe vertrokken ze om vijf uur 's-morgens en liepen dan drie uur voor ze op het werk waren. Hun dienst duurde van acht tot vijf en dan dezelfde weg weer terug. 's-Avonds rond acht uur kwamen ze dan doodmoe weer thuis. Dat was zo niet jarenlang vol te houden , maar het verdiende goed. dat loopwerk hebben ze volgehouden tot de tram naar Aken werd aangelegd. Later fietste Joep samen met zijn broer Sjeng iedere dag op en neer naar de cokesfabriek in Alsdorf, waar hij als sjouwer 135 kilogram zware zakken cokes wegdroeg, die zijn broer gevuld had.
Joep werd met een lengte van 1 m 64 goedgekeurd voor de nationale militie; tijdens deze keuring werden de volgende persoonskenmerken vermeld: ovaal aangezicht, hoog voorhoofd, bruine ogen, gewone neus, gewone mond, ronde kin, blonde haren en wenkbrauwen.
Hij trouwde pas op latere leeftijd, en was de eigenaar van diverse weilanden en van het huis waar zijn jongste zussen Christien en Antje in woonden. Hij heette rijk te zijn. Toen deze oom stierf, hoopte de familie Gerits op een dikke erfenis, doch groot was de teleurstelling en nog veel groter de woede over het feit dat alle geld naar de familie Mertens van de tant Marie ging (dit zo vertelde neef Zef Gerits [GEB. 1920] door het feit dat nonk Joësep in demente toestand een testament ondertekende). In Hoensbroek is daar later, op de plek naast het huidige Carbooncollege, precies daar waar de oude kaplanie gestaan heeft, een groot glazen winkelpand gebouwd, waarover ik menigmaal de opmerking hoorde dat die winkel van "ons geld" is betaald.
Nonk Joësep ging, wanneer hij bij zijn broers en zussen op bezoek ging, altijd met de fiets. De wandelstok bomnd hij tussen zadel en stuur en zijn grote zwarte hond liep altijd direct naast hem. Hij was van het gezapige type. Hij heeft, mogelijk om zich een plaats in de hemel te verschaffen nog het kapelletje gebouwd dat staat op de hoek van de Schuureikenweg en de Terschurenweg. Zijn zussen Christien en Antje onderhielden die kapel.
