    Zef begon op 16 april 1935 te werken op de Oranje Nassau IV, gelegen op de Heksenberg, maar na een dik jaar, op 3 augustus 1936 kon hij op de staatsmijn Emma gaan werken. Op de Emma begon hij als leesjongen onder werknummer 5204 te werken, op 7 december 1938 werd hij sleper onder werknummer 241, vervolgens werd hij op 1 juli 1940 postsleper, en op 1 augustus 1941 hulphouwer. Op 1 september 1944 behaalde hij zijn houwersdiploma. Zijn werknummer wijzigde pas weer op 1 april 1961 in werknummer 7518. Een jaar later werd eveneens op 1 april zijn werknummer 217. Zijn loon per verrichtte ondergronds dienst bedroeg in 1959 fl 15,17; en liep op tot fl 37,55 in 1971. Ten gevolge van de mijnsluiting, en door het feit dat hij reeds te oud geacht werd om om te scholen, werd hij afgekeurd en kreeg hij per 29 september 1971 een W.A.O-uitkering. Bij zijn 25-jarig dienstjubileum in 1961 luidde zijn beoordeling: zeer goed

Notes about Hubert Jozef "Zef" Gerits

Zef groeide tot circa 14 jaar op in het gehucht Weustenrade (gemeente Klimmen); daarna verhuisde hij met zijn ouders en de overige gezinsleden naar de Schurenbergweg 20, alwaar zij intrek namen in het huis van zijn opa en oma van vaderskant. Zef ging na 7 klassen lager onderwijs op de mijn werken: in eerste naar de Oranje Nassau IV, gelegen op de Heksenberg, maar na een dik jaar, op 3 augustus 1936 kon hij op de staatsmijn Emma gaan werken.
Aan het begin van de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd hij gemobiliseerd, met zijn legeronderdeel (het 17e Regiment Infanterie, 1e Bataljon, 1e Compagnie), gingen ze op weg naar de Grebbeberg, gelukkig voor hem capituleerde Nederland alvorens hij en zijn onderdeel op de Grebbeberg aankwamen. In 1941 was hij lid van de blokploeg luchtbeschermingsdienst te Hoensbroek. Na de bevrijding van Zuid-Nederland in september 1944, diende hij tot de bevrijding van geheel Nederland bij de bewakingstroepen Mijnstreek; en wel bij het Bataljon Treebeek, dat behoorde tot de 1e Compagnie Hoensbroek.
Tijdens de oorlog kwam hij geregeld bij een vriend en collega mijnwerker Niek Meijers uit Ter Siepe in Nuth over de vloer. Begin 1945 kreeg hij een verhouding met een van de zussen van Niek: Anna. In 1946 traden zij in het huwelijk en woonden aanvankelijk circa drie jaar bij de moeder van Anna in huis. Daarna verhuisden zij naar de Nieuwstraat (later dorpstraat geheten) nr. 18. Hier bleef hij tot zijn dood in 1995 wonen.
Communiefeesten en anderszins werden in huize Gerits in de Nieuwstraat uitbundig en op ouderwetse wijze gevierd.
Zef was een zeer gelovig en rechtvaardig mens en kon er niet tegen in onvrede met andere mensen te moeten leven, wanneer er binnen de familie Gerits of Meijers problemen waren, was hij steeds weer diegene die gevraagd werd de problemen te helpen oplossen.
Zef was circa twintig jaar lang lid van de Nuthse turnvereniging de Albatros, zijn functie bestond o.a. uit het ophalen van de contributiegelden, waardoor hij bij vrijwel de gehele dorpsgemeenschap bekend was.
Zef's grootste hobby was tuinieren; zijn kleinkinderen zullen zich echter vooral zijn bakkunsten herinneren; ook was hij een gepassioneerd wandelaar. Zijn favoriete vakantieland was Oostenrijk.
In 1995 overleed Zef na een lang en pijnlijk ziekbed aan de gevolgen van kanker; in zijn afscheidsbrief (waarvan ik een kopie bezit) bedankte hij zich bij zijn vrouw en kinderen voor het mooie leven dat hij met hen mocht doormaken. Een verkorte versie van zijn afscheidsbrief werd op zijn bidprentje afgedrukt.
