De oudste dochter van Jan Mathijs Gerits en Anna Maria Haan groeide vanaf het moment toen ze een jaar of twaals was niet in het ouderlijk gezin op, maar bij (zoals het vroeger wel vaker gebeurde) de oudste kinderloze zus van Jan Mathijs, Trud, en diens man Jan Hubert Henssen.
Lies behaalde haar diploma onderwijzeres in juni 1936 aan de R.K. Kweekschool voor onderwijzeressen der Zusters Ursulinen aan de Wijnstraat te Echt.
Lies is ongehuwd gebleven. Kort voor het uitbreken van de oorlog werd zij wel smoorverliefd op een in de omgeving gelegerde soldaat die afkomstig was uit de regio Rotterdam. Zijn naam was Arend. Doch de liefde vond in de ogen van haar ouders en in die van tant Trud en nonk Huber geen genade, want Arend was "protestant". Het verplicht afscheid hebben moeten nemen van die Arend, zou voor haar zo'n impact moeten hebben gehad, dat ze nooit meer heeft willen trouwen.
Lies werkte als onderwijzeres in eerste instantie op de Petrusschool in Hoensbroek als volontair (wel werken maar geen geld) en later bij de zusters aan de school "aan 't Kruts" (St. Janschool) te Hoensbroek. Lies was gedurende 40 jaar als onderwijzeres werkzaam. Ook was zij langjarig jeugdleidster bij scoutinggroep St. Gerlach. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog was zij actief in de ondergrondse verzetbeweging. Bij gelegenheid van haar 40-jarig dienstjubileum, werd haar het ereburgerschap van de gemeente Hoensbroek, en de zilveren eremedaille van verdiensten van de gemeente Hoensbroek aangeboden, dit als dank voor de vele verdiensten aan de Hoensbroekse gemeenschap.
