'Verlyn and Helen Groen Family

'Verlyn and Helen Groen live in Section 32 of LaValley Township, on the southwest 80 acres.

Verlyn was born Feb. 20, 1937, to Heiko and Etta Groen. Helen, born Aug. 21, 1938, is the daughter of Arnold and Margaretta Bossman.

They met while students of Lennox High School and were married Jan. 3, 1957. They lived on the farm where Verlyn was born, the Groen family homestead, in Delaware Township. His parents retired to Lennox at that time. They farmed therefor ten years. In December of 1966, they moved to LaValley Township to a farm owned by Helen's parents. The previous owner had been John and Christian Gayken. In 1970, they bought the farm from the Bossmans. They continued to milkcows until 1977 when Verlyn got a job with Great Plains Supply in Lennox and then Canton.

In 1981, they sold the north 80 acres of thier place with the buildings to Alfred and Gail Slaathaug, and built a new home at the southwest corner of the section. With Verlyn's experience in carpentry, he built the home with the helpfrom two other carpenters, family and friends. They were able to get the stairway banister from the old Groen house and refinish it to use in their new place for their open stairway.

Their daughter, Carmen was born June 22, 1959. She attended Worthing Grade School, graduated from Lennox High School and from S.D.S.U. in Brookings with a bachelors degree in Home Economic Education in 1981. She is now teaching juniorand senior high school home economics at Plankinton Public Schools. In the summer months she is nutritionist at the 4-H Camp on Lake Herman near Madison.

Mark was born Jan. 23, 1975. He is now at Worthing School. He is interested in baseball and football, and enjoys reading. He also takes piano lessons.

Verlyn is now employed by the town of Worthing and Helen works at Northwest Fabrics in Sioux Falls. Verlyn is Assistant Chief with the Worthing Fire Department. Both are members of the Reformed Church in Lennox where they are part ofall the functions of the church. Mark is in Children's Choir and Whirlybirds.
