"Peter Groen was born Dec. 6, 1877, in Germany to Jan and Remda Groen. When he was eight years old (1885), the family immigrated to the United States and settled in Forreston, Ill., where they continued to live untill 1889. At this timethe Groens decided to move on th South Dakota and settled on a farm southeast of Lennox. It was here that Peter grew to manhood and on Feb. 20, 1907, he was united in marriage to Ella Johnke of Parker [Turner Co]. Atthis time Peter'sfather purchased a farm southwest of Lennox and it was here the newlyweds lived. Peter was one of the few farmers who owned and operated a large steam engine threshing machine and was kept busy with the neighborhood threshing. Theironly child, John William, was born in 1910 Two years later the Groens purchased a farm in Delaware Township and continued to live here until 1918, at which time they moved into Lennox, purchasing the Everrett home at 420 W. 3rd. Peterworked at the Farmer's Shipping Association. Because of his previous experience with the steam engine, he became custodian of the Lennox Public School which was heated by steam boilers. Ella enjoued quilting, canning, and baking,especially bread, and would often these items in the county fair, which at that time was held in Lennox. She was also an active member of Philathea Circle of Second Reformed Church and the Pioneer Extension Club. In 1930 Peter and Ellamoved back to their farm and lived there through the depression years until 1944. At this time Peter retired and purchased the Raker home at 321 W. 2nd in Lennox. Later they purchased a new home built by Marvin Beeners, and it was here Peter died, Dec. 4, 1950. Ella passed away May 26, 1966." - The History of Lincoln County South Dakota, 1985, pg. 404.
