Magdalene Penning Nov. 16, 1926 - March 26, 2019

ALGONA - Magdalene A. Penning, age 92 of Algona, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. Funeral services were held on Monday, April 1, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Algona with Rev. Walt Reemtsma and Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Burial was in the Woden Christian Reformed Church Cemetery, with Stanley Limburg officiating. [The church is 6 miles north and 2 miles east of Wesley.] Visitation was held on Sunday, March 31, from 2 tol 5 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Algona.

Magdalene Ann Penning was born on November 16, 1926, at Titonka, Iowa, to John and Lena (Bruns) Harringa. She received her education in the rural school near Titonka and later earned her GED on her own. Magdalene started out helping area families when newborns arrived. She was married to Robert L. Penning on March 26, 1946, at the Woden Christian Reformed Church. The couple lived in Britt, [Iowa]. Magdalene and Bob started farming northeast of Wesley, Iowa in 1951. In 1965, they moved to a farm east of Corwith, Iowa and farmed until both retired. In 1999, the couple moved to Algona, Iowa.

Magdalene was an active member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church and a Calvinette Leader, and member of Ladies Aid at the Woden Christian Reformed Church, Britt High School Music Mothers. After moving to the farm near Corwith she became a member of Corwith Wesley Music Mothers where she served as the president, and a member of Delta Club and Corwith Women's Club. She enjoyed cooking and baking pan after pan of cinnamon rolls. Magdalene loved tending to her flowers, gardening and in her early years, roller skating. She had a love for the land and the farm operation. Magdalene and Bob started traveling in 1983 and had spent many winters in Arizona and visited every state multiple times.

Magdalene is survived by her children, Bobby J. Penning, Corwith, Iowa and wife, Wanetta M. Penning of Minnetrista, Minn., Peggy R. Bierma and husband, Michael, Blaine, Minn.; Patricia K. Droge and husband, Vernon, Manhattan, Mont.; and son-in-law, Martin Krebs, St. Albans, Mo.; 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings, Clarence (Marjorie) Harringa of Britt, Deloris (Harlan) Eekhoff of Britt, Shirley (Byron) Ruter of Kanawha and Roger (Gail) Harringa of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert L. Penning; daughter, Pamela S. Krebs and sister, Leona Peters.
