Burial is in the Woden Christian Reformed Church Cemetery. The church is 6 miles north and 2 miles east of Wesley.

Robert Leroy Penning was born on April 18, 1925, at Buffalo Center, Iowa, to Bielto and Rally Redenius Penning. He received his early education in the rural school near Buffalo Center and graduated from the Buffalo Center High School. Bob served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps. After his service, Bob was married to Magdalene Harringa on March 26, 1946, at the Woden Christian Reformed Church. The couple lived in Britt, Iowa, where Bob was employed at the Woodford-Wheeler Lumber Co. for 4 years. Bob and Magdalene started farming northeast of Wesley, Iowa in 1951. In 1965, they moved to a farm east of Corwith, Iowa and farmed until Bob retired. In 1999, the couple moved to Algona, Iowa.

Bob was an active member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church, where he served as an Elder, Deacon, Usher and Sunday School Treasurer. In 1984, Bob was co-chair of the Church Building Committee. Bob also belonged to the Elmer Wilson American Legion Post #229 at Corwith, had served on the Soil Conservation Board and was a former Telephone Board Member. He enjoyed farming, not only as an occupation but as a hobby. Bob and Magdalene enjoyed traveling and had spent many winters in Arizona.

Bob died at his home in Algona on Saturday, June 23, 2007, following a lingering illness. He was 82.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Magdalene of Algona, Iowa; his children, B. J. Penning, Corwith, Iowa, Peggy Bierma and husband, Michael, Blaine, Minnesota, Patricia Droge and husband, Vernon, Manhattan, Montana, Pamela Krebs and husband, Martin, Wildwood, Missouri, and a daughter-in-law, Karen Penning of Corwith, Iowa. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, an infant brother, Clarence, Marvin, and John; and 1 sister, Thelma Beenken.
