"Clarence B. Penning, 79

Funeral services for Clarence B. Penning, 79, were held Saturday, October 25, 1:30 p.m. at Ramsey Reformed Church in rural Titonka with Rev. Dennis Redeker officiating. Graveside military rites were conducted by Buffalo CenterVFW-American Legion Color Guard. Interment was at Ramsey Reformed Church Cemetery in rural Titonka with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Music was provided by Donna Dreesman as organist, Serior Choir, and congregation participating in the singing of hymns. Honorary casketbearers were his grandchildren: Carina Donkersloot, Ryan Donkersloot, and Austin Donkersloot. Casketbearers were his nephews: B. J. Penning, Ron Penning, Jery Penning, Donovan Beenken, Randy Beenken, and Rodney Beenken.

Clarence Burton Penning was born February 13, 1918 near Britt to Bielto and Rally (Redenius) Penning. He was baptized at the Christian Reformed Church near Woden and confirmed at the Ramsey Reformed Church near Titonka where he remained a member for 61 years.

Clarence attended school at German Township #1. Following his education, he farmed with his dad and helped the neighbors.

On December 31, 1941, Clarence married Dorothy Sleper at Ramsey Reformed Church. From 1942 to 1946, Clarence served in the United States Army in the 81st Wildcat Division. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW at Buffalo Center.

Clarence and Dorothy lived and farmed near Britt from 1946-1963 and since that time near Buffalo Center. Clarence loved to farm and loved his family.

Clarence was active in the church his entire life, earlier, in the youth fellowship and as Editor-in-Chief of the Ramsey Reporter, as an usher, and later serving on the consistory each available term from 1963 to 1990. He enjoyed organizing and attending the school reunions.

Clarence passed away at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt on Wednesday, October 22, 1997, following a brief fight with melanoma cancer.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy; daughter, Barbara, and her husband, Robert Donkersloot of Mt. Pleasant; son, Douglas Penning, and his special friend, Karen Larson of Buffalo Cnter; daughter, Carolyn and her husband, Jay Edgar of Mason City; three grandchildren: Carina, Ryan and Austin Donkersloot one brother, Robert Penning and his wife, Magldalene of Corwith; one sister, Thelma and her husband, Richard Beenken of Algona; two sisters-in-law, Amelia Graves of Buffalo Center and Mildred Penning of Kiester, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers; John, Marvin and one in infancy."
