"Clarence Penning was born on February 13, 1918 at Britt, Iowa to Beilto and Rally (Redenius) Penning whose parents came from Germany. When he was only a couple of years old the family moved to their farm southwest of Buffalo Center.Here four more children joined the family: Marvin, John, Robert and Thelma. Clarence attended rural school in German Township No. 1 in Kossuth County.
Clarence has always enjoyed farming. He helped on the family farm and worked for others in the neighborhood as a hired hand. Clarence has always attended the Ramsey Reformed Church at rural Titonka, Iowa, and became a member in 1936; he was active in the Youth Fellowship and later served on the consistory for many years.
Dorothy Sleper was born on November 14, 1918 at Titonka to Dick and Anna (Meyer) Sleper. The also were farmers. Dorothy attended rural school in German Township No. 4 in Kossuth County, then high school in Titonka, and Iowa StateTeachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught rural schools in German Township in Kossuth County and in Orthel Twonship in Hancock County. Dorthy also attended the Ramsey

Reformed Church and became a member in 1936; she was active in Youth Fellowship and taught Sunday school, catechism and Bible school for many years; she has been active with the Reformed Church Women, serving as president, vice president,and circle chairman.
Dorothy's paternal grandparents came to America from Germany; her maternal grandparents were born in Illinois. In 1950 Dorothy's parents, the Dick Slepers, moved into their home in Buffalo Center. Her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. AlbertSleper, Sr., lived in Buffalo Center for many years. She has a number of relatives still living in Buffalo Center.
Dorothy's father, Dick Sleper, and her husband, Clarence Penning, grew up on the same farm. Dorothy's grandfather owned the farm before Clarence's father, Beilto Penning, purchased it.
On December 31, 1941, Clarence and Dorothy were married in the Ramsey Reformed Church by the Rev. Calvin Schnucker. On June 11, 1942 Clarence left for duty with the U.S. Army in World War II. He was with the 81st Infantry Division and received his basic training in Camp Rucker, Alabama; he was in active service in the Islands of the South Pacific. He returned home in January 1946. While Clarence was with the Armed Services, Dorothy lived with her parents and continuedteaching school.
In June of 1946 Clarence and Dorothy moved to a farm northwest of Britt. While they lived there their three children were born: Barbara on June 11, 1949; Douglas on September 8, 1952; and Carolyn on June 15, 1949. Barbara and Douglas attended school in Britt until February 1963 when the Penning family moved to their farm southwest of Buffalo Center where they are still farming. Barbara, Douglas and Carolyn all graduated from Buffalo Center High School-Barbara in1967, Douglas in 1970, Carolyn in 1977. They all attended Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Barbara is married to Robert Donkersloot and they live near Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Both are teachers and parents of three children: Carina13, Ryan 11, and Austin 2.
Douglas worked for John Deere Implement of Buffalo Center for 20 years. He and Allen Hagenson have recently started the Thompson Ag. Service in Thompson, Iowa.
Carolyn is married to Jay Eggar. They live on a farm near Mason City, Iowa. Carolyn coaches volleyball and girls basketball in Manly, Iowa. Jay farms and works with Hanna Farm Drainage in Kensett, Iowa."

"Dorothy Penning, 88
Funeral services for Dorothy Penning, 88, of Buffalo Center were held Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at Ramsey Reformed Church, rural Titonka, with Pastor Dennis Redeker officiating. Music was furnished by Donna Dreesman, organist and the church choir. Honorary beareres were Carina, Ryan and Austin Donkersloot. Casketbeareres were BJ Penning, Jr., Ron Penning, Jerry Penning, Donovan Beenken, Randy Beenken and Rodney Beenken. Intermant was in the church cemetery with the Winter Funeral Home of Buffalo Center in charge of arrangements. Dorothy Penning, 88, of Buffalo Center died on Saturday, November 25, 2006 at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.
Dorothy Sleper Penning was born to Dick and Anna (Meyer) Sleper on November 14, 1918, while Dick was serving in France during World War I. She met her father when she was two years old. Dorothy was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Ramsey Reformed Church in rural Titonka. She attended German Township country school #4, Titonka High School, and the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls.
Dorothy married Clarence B. Penning on December 31, 1941 and continued teaching while he served in the South Pacific, returning home on January 11, 1946. Upon his return, the couple farmed near Britt, Iowa. In February 1963, the family moved to the Penning farm near Buffalo Center. Dorothy served in the Ramsey Reformed Church in many capacities and enjoyed each one. She and Clarence enjoyed local celebrations, fairs, and reunions of family and classmates. She will be missed and remembered in the hearts of her family, friends, and former students.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, on October 22, 1997, brother's-in-law Marvin Penning and wife, Mildred, and John Penning, and by sister-in-law Thelma Penning Beenken.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Barbara Penning Donkersloot and husband, Robert, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Douglas Penning and wife Karen, of Buffalo Center, and Carolyn Penning Edgar and husband, Jay, of Mason City, her grandchildren: Carina Donkersloot and fiancé, Jeff Degase, Ryan Donkersloot and fiancé [sic], Michelle Adler, and Austin Donkersloot; brothers-in-law Robert Penning and wife, Magdalene, and Richard Beenken; sister-in-law Amelia Graves, and aunt Ruby Sleper."
