Event: Census 1900 21 JUN 1900 Listed in the census. 5 Note: The 1900 Census record lists given name as Engelke, hence it is concluded that Edward is either an Americanization of Engelke or a nickname.

Funeral service was held for Ed Ackerman of Ashton on Wednesday, September 22, 1993 from the First Presbyterian Church of Ashton. Dr David Ullom officiated. Special music was provided by Harold Buysman, Lawrence Rensink, Kenneth Winkeland Dr David Ullom who sang going down the Valley, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, and the pianist was Nellie Adengast.

Casket bearers were Frederick Schaa, Roger Ackerman, Stanley Ackerman, Richard Bruns, Daryl Bruns, and Dennis Ackerman. Internment was in the Gilman Township Cemetery in Ashton with Walton Roste funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Edward M Ackerman was born April 28, 1892 on his family's homestead in Lyon County, IA the son of Mike and Mary (Hassebroek) Ackerman. Ed grew up on the family farm and attended country school. After receiving his education Ed worked forhis father on the farm. On January 6, 1915 Ed was united in Marriage to Tena Grave at the home of her parents near Ashton, IA. Following their marriage they farmed on their own east of George. They farmed that ground until they purchased land NW of Ashton. Ed ran his own feed grinding business for a short time while farming. He also worked in the construction business for many years, first for Christenson construction and later on his own.

He built the home that he and Tena moved into in Sibley, IA in 1954. Ed and Tena lived in Sibley for 2 years before moving into their home in Ashton where they spent the next 37 years together. Ed was always working because he loved it.He loved farming and construction and was a jack of all trades. When he wasn't working he enjoyed fishing with Tena or spending time with her in their garden. Ed was known for his latchhook works and made all kinds of handy wood crafts that he woud give to family and friends.

Ed had been a member of the Zoar Presbyterian Church while living near George and with the First Presbyterian Church of Ashton where he served as a trustee. He was also a favorite around the block with the neighborhood children. Ed loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He passed away on September 20, 1993 at the Sibley Care Center where he and Tena had been residents at the age of 104.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 78 years, Tena of Sibley; son Marlyn Ackerman and wife Berdeen of Ashton; 3 daughters Marvella Schaa and husband Gordon of Little Rock; Verna (Mrs Fred) Bruns of Worthington, MN and Nellie (Mrs Marvin) Bruns of Sioux Falls; and a daughter-in-law Fannie Ackerman of Sioux Falls. Also surviving are Ed's 27 grandchildren, 71 great grandchildren, 51 great great grandchildren; along with his 2 borthers Fred Ackerman of George;Mitchell and wife Carrie of Little Rock; 5 sisters Minnie DeNeui, Lena DeGroot, and Anna Beek of George; Martha Julius of Rock Rapids and Grace Drenth of Sibley. Preceding Ed in death was his son Harvey Ackerman, 2 grandchildren, a brother Pete Ackerman and his parents.

"Edward Ackerman, Ashton, Iowa

Edward Ackerman, 101, of Ashton, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1993, at Sibley Care Center, Sibley, Iowa.

Born April 28, 1892, in Lyon County, Iowa, he was the son of Mike and Mary Hassebroek Ackerman. He married Tena Grave Jan 6, 1915, near Ashton.

He attended Lyon County country school and began working the family farm. After marriage, they began farming near George, Iowa, until 1937 when they purchased land near Ashton. He operated a feed grinder business while farming, and also worked with Christensen Construction for many years before starting his own constructin business. They moved to Sibley, Iowa, in 1954. Two years later they moved to Ashon. He was a member of Zoar Presbyterian Church, George, and First Presbyterian Church, Ashton, where he served as trustee.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Marlyn Acherman, Ashton; three daughters, Mrs. Marvella (Gordon) Schaa, Little Rock, Iowa, Mrs. Verna (Fred) Bruns, Worthington, and Mrs. Nellie (Marvin) Bruns, Sioux Falls, S.D.; two brothers, Fred Ackerman, George, and Mitchel Ackerman, Little Rock; five sisters, Minnie DeNeui, Lena DeGroote and Anna Beek, all of George, Martha Julius, Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Grace Drendt, Sheldon, Iowa; 27 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; and 51 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8:30 pm., at Walton-Roste Funeral Home, Sibley.

The service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, Ashton, with the Rev. David Ullom officiating. Burial will be in Gilman Township Cemetery, Ashton."
