LITTLE MAYLAND GIRL BURNED TO DEATH
Angelina Mayland, 7 - Year - Old Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mayland Died Saturday Morning
Engelina Mayland, the 7-year-old daughter of Mrs. [sic] and Mrs. Fred Mayland, south of Woden, died Saturday morning after being badly burned when she undertook to start a file in a cook stove. As much information as we can get the factsare about as follows. School closed Friday after the teacher and pupils had enjoyed a picnic during the afternoon. When Engelina came home from school she started to build a fire under in order to heat water to wash the dinner dishes.Whether she poured gas ... on hot embers in the stove no one seems to know. A can was found in the yard burned black and around the can the ground showed that there had beeen oil or gas burning. Her mother was in the cellar, her fatherin the corn field and the other members of the family were out in the yard, consequently no one was very near when the accident occurred. She had presence of mind to carry the cup of gas outside and ran from there to where her brothersand sisters were playing at the barn while her clothes were on fire. When her mother arrived she snatched off all of her clothes that were left. She was taken to the hospital at Forest City at once. She was so badly burned that shepassed away Saturday morning at 3 o'clock. Funeral services were held Sunday at the German Lutheran church, Rev. A. Killian's charge, the sermon being delivered by the pastor. Interment followed in the Helmers cemetery in Germantownship. A number of relatives from a distance attended the funeral Sunday, they wre Mr. and Mrs. Dick J. Kruse of Adrian, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Will Koch, Mr. and Mrs. John Harms, Jr., John Harms, Sr., and Mrs. Henry Geisking all ofWellsburg, Iowa. The [Titonka] Topic extends its sympathy to the family in their bereavement"
"Obituary of Angelina Wilhelmine Mayland
Children are a gift of God, that we realize when we must lament the loss of a child. they belong to him, from whom everything has its life and in whose hands everone's life is held When he says: "Return to me the gift that I haveentrusted to you, then we must give them to him even tho our hearts bleed.
This is what the bereaved parents Fredrick and Etta Mayland had to experience these days when the Lord asked them to return to him the child he had given them April 11th, 1921. And since they considered it to be a gift of God and reallybelonging to him, they had it baptized June 12th thereby dedicating it to him.
Only a short time they were permitted to have it, its stay was only for 7 years, 1 month and 15 days. s a dear child of loving parents it sought to do little deeds of service to them whenever it could to help mother with the daily tasks. Thus, it happened that the terrible accident overtook it last Friday evening. Without being told to do so, she wanted to build a fire for the evening meal using kerosene to start the fire. Evidently there must have been some live coalin the stove from the previous fire, the result was that an explosion followed with the result that she suffered terrible burns on her whole body which caused her death Saturday morning at 3 o'clock. She leaves to mourn her untimelydeath, her parents and six brothers and sisters. May the Lord comfort the parents with the thought that their irreparable loss is their child's greatest gain; and that he in merce delivered her from much misery and torture by her suddendeath and that she is now where no evil can touch her, hes, mar the Lord in mercy for th sake of our Savior, deliver also the parents and us all from all evil and take us to himself in heaven.
