Notes about Arend Nijborg

Arend was landbouwer en een fanatieke visser. Op zijn Kaptein Mobilette bond hij aan de ene kant zijn hengel en aan de andere kant zijn visnet vast.
Hele afstanden legde hij af voor deze hobby. Zo was hij een keer naar Duitsland om te vissen, maar op een gegeven moment wist hij de weg niet meer.
Zachtjes rijdend naderde hij een boer en vroeg deze de weg. Tijdens dit gesprek met de boer is hij toen het kanaal in gereden. Hij had vele lagen kleding aan en die waren allemaal drijfnat. Sindsdien werd hij in Ubbena, als men hem wat wilde plagen "waterdemoon" genoemd.
Arend heeft ook in Hooghalen en Laaghalen gewoond als zeer vooruitstrevend landbouwer. Op jonge leeftijd maaide hij zijn gras al met een maaimachine.
Omwonende boeren vonden dat in die tijd heel vreemd, dat kon niet goed zijn. De zoons van die boeren vertelden hun vaders dat Arend naar de landbouwschool was geweest en het dus wel goed zou weten. Maar de boeren wilden van het hele verhaal niets weten. Het volgende jaar had Arend als eerste prima gras.
Toen kwamen de omwonende boeren naar Arend met de vraag of hij hun gras ook wilde maaien met de maaimachine.
