Opleiding Zeevaartschool te Den Helder. Tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog Rode Kruis chauffeur in het gebombardeerde Rotterdam en sedert de tweede helft van 1943 samen met zijn toekomstige echtgenote lid van een strategische spionagegroep, met als taak Duitse troepen- en materiaalverplaatsingen in Nederland te rapporteren. Na de oorlog werkzaam in de landbouw, waarna het gezin in 1951 naar Canada emigreert. Zij vestigen zich in Duncan BC (Vancouver Island) en worden in 1956 Canadees staatsburger. Werkt twee jaar op een pluimveefarm, en daarna voornamelijk in de houtindustrie op Vancouver Island als steam-engineer, belast met de leiding over het stoommaterieel in houtzagerijen.
