Handelsschool te Amsterdam; in 1855 naar Nederland Indië: vertrekt op 22 juni 1855 uit Nieuwe Diep zeilend per Willem III (kapitein Zeylstra), aankomst Batavia 12 oktober 1855. 1 November 1855 begonnen als adjunctboekhouder, en op 16 juni 1857 schrijft hij in de almanak 1857 te zijn benoemd tot boekhouder der Javasche Bank; hij is vanaf 1863 kas-sier van de Javasche Bank te Batavia. 1867 tijdelijk beheerder van het kantoor van de bank te Soerabaja. Na meest eervol ontslag in 1873 koopman en reder te Amsterdam, samen met Y. Feenstra . Zij bezaten de bark "Johann Theodor" gebouwd in 1877, 602 ton "nieuwe maat" (waarvan aquarel in bezit Westermann) en de brik "Vrijheid" (ex "Rio de la Plata"), gebouwd 1867, 232 ton "nieuwe maat" (waarvan schilderij in bezit Westermann). Medeoprichter van de Molukse Handelsvereniging. Vrijmetselaar; in 1861 aangenomen in de loge "De Ster in het Oosten" van de orde van Vrijmetselaren te Batavia. In 1874 ingeschreven bij de Waalse Kerk te Amsterdam. Zeer muzikaal, aktief in het muziekleven in Batavia en Amsterdam (Keizersgracht 593 en 561 en Herengracht 274).
