Oprichter, in 2008, van het Kees Westermann Fonds dat entameert wetenschappelijk onderzoek in het kader van de ziekte van Rendu Osler Weber en reserveert middelen hiertoe, middels de Stichting Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Rendu Osler (SWORO). Hij werd koninklijk onderscheiden als Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw, vooral vanwege zijn inzet voor patiënten met de ziekte van Rendu-Osler-Weber (ROW).
