Hy wou verder gaan studeer , maar finansies kortwiek hom en skryf in by prokureer, maar hy laat vaar dit en word `n verslaggewer by Die Burger Okt 1936. Op 1 Sept 1945 trou hy met Anna Catherina Steyn Hattingh Ans,(*28.02.1918 + 24.06.2009 Seapark-siekeboeg,Melkbosstrand,) `n verpleegster in die NG –kerk Lindley .Hulle het een seun Hendrik Christiaan (dis ek) * 26.01.1947 Kaapstad .Hy(Hugo) word later parlemetêre verslagewer ,en word 21 Jan 1949 Nuusredakteur en later hoofredakteur en bestuurder van die Volksblad.(tot 21 Jan 1970). Daarna vertrek hy na Johannesburg waar Hy die Transvaler oorneem later die Beeld en nog later die Raport. Terug in die kaap word hy hoofbestuurder van Nasionale koerante en groepbestuurder waarna hy aftree op 7 Des 1974. Hy is oorlede op 17 Okt 1975 in die Tygerberg Hospitaal.
