POWER - Richard John Ewert, 80, of Power, a World War II Navy veteran and a career telegrapher for the Great Northern/Burlington Northern Railroad, died of natural causes Monday at Peace Hospice in Great Falls.
Survivors include his wife, 3 daughters, a son, a sister, nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Richard was born March 5, 1927, in Minneapolis and attended Stoney Brook School near Pequot Lakes. He served in the Navy Seabees during WWII in the Pacific campaign and was on ship in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered.
He attended railroad school in Minneapolis, and began as an apprentice telegrapher for the Great Northern Railroad in 1948 in Simms and Buffalo.
He eventually was assigned to Power as a telegrapher, where he married Beverly Davis in 1949, and retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1987. He had also worked in Dutton and Brady.
Richard enjoyed cooking and baking and was good at it. He also loved everything about the sea and deco-rated his family room at home accordingly. He served as a volunteer fireman for the Power Volunteer Fire Department and was involved with the Power Community Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and as a deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cassen and Adeline Dirks; and a sister, Marguerite Wolcott, all of Pequot Lakes.
