Funeral services for Amos Wempen, 96, were held Saturday, January 31 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center. Rev. Paul Haugen officiated. Vera Bronleewe was the organist. Judy Junkermeier provided special music. The congregation also sang. Casketbearers were Amoss grandsons: Mike Wempen, David Wempen, Ryan Wempen, Robb Wempen, Erik Magelee and Nicholas Magelee. Honorarycasketbearers were Amoss granddaughters: Kris Drevlow, Debra Reiland, Sara Jones and Lori Tammeus; and a special friend, LeRoy Weaver. Interment was in Olena Mound Cemetery at Buffalo Center. Amos passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2004at the Timely Mission Nursing Home. Winter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Amos Wempen, son of Dick and Grace (Adams) Wempen, was born on June 30, 1907 near George. He, with his parents, moved to Buffalo Center in 1912. Amos attended Buffalo Center schools.
On February 11, 1932, Amos was united in marriage to Jeanette Lubben in Buffalo Center. Together they farmed north of Buffalo Center and raised a family of three boys, Richard, Rollin and Royce.
Amos enjoyed the farm life, being able to plant and to harvest the fruit of the land and then to share those products with his family and many friends. He will be remembered for his raspberries, flowers and his homegrown honey. Afterretirement and when Amos and Jeanette moved into town in 1979, many local businesses received flowers grown in their garden during Amos morning visits.
Amos served as a personal property tax assessor for Winnebago County; he also served on the Buffalo Center Community School Board; was a seed corn salesman and was a fourth generation bee keeper. He was an avid sports fan and he reallyenjoyed Buffalo Center girls basketball. He was recognized as North Iowa Schools Fan of the Year while in his 80s. He was able to live independently until age 93 when he became a resident of Timely Mission Nursing Home in BuffaloCenter.
Amos is survived by his three sons: Richard and his wife, Rita, of Clear Lake; Rollin and his wife, Kathy, of Fairmont; Royce and his wife, Linda, of St. Peter, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two brothers:George and his wife, Irene, of Buffalo Center; Harry and his wife, Edith, of Oregon; his sister, Esther Grimes of Buffalo Center; sisters-in-law, Lydia Gruis of Waukon, Arlene Ostercamp of Titonka, Esther Lubben of Forest City; severalother relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanette, in 1999; his sister, Margaret Sonnenberg, and his brother, William." <>
