Note: Former Aged Tea Woman Stricken A resident of the Tea area for over 60 years, Mrs. Anna Gerken passed away last Friday, August 17, in the Sioux Falls Good Samaritan Center. She had been in failing health for some time. She attained the age of 94 years, 11 months and 4days.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning in Trinity Lutheran Church of Tea, whit the Rev. Ron Beckman officiating. Organist was Dwan Hoffman and vocalists were Linda Beckman and Dawn Hoffman who sang One Day at a Time, and BeautifulSavior. Pallbearers were Dale Williamson, Leon Pfotengauer, Steven Olson, Alfred Boysen, George Snyder, and Glenn Fritz. Burial was in the Lennox cemetery.
Mrs. Gerken, nee Anna Akkerman was born on a farm south of Lennox on September 13, 1889, the daughter of Ben and Ella (Jensen) Akkerman. When she was a small child the family moved to Ashton, IA where she attended grade school and when inher teens came to the Tea, Sioux Falls area. On February 6, 1909 she was united in marriage to Bendard (Ben) Gerken at Sioux Falls. The couple located on a farm in the Tea area and there farmed for 13 years. they then took up residence in Tea where her husband was employed by theGreat Northern railroad. Her husband passed away on january 23, 1957. Mrs. Gerken to make her home in Tea until November 1975 when she moved to Sioux Falls to make her home with her daughter Alma. She was a member of the Tea Trinity Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband and 5 brothers,George, Bennie, Harry, Bill and Mike.
