Longtime Willow Lake area farmer, Herman (Harry) Akkerman, 84. passed away at an Aberdeen hospital on Sunday. Services will be held at the Presbyterian Reformed Church United at Willow Lake at 1:30 PM today (Thursday). Rev. Charles Blomand Rev. Harvey Calsbeek will officiate. Organist for the service will be Elnora HJohnson. vocal numbers will be by a quartet with internement at Collins Cemetery, Willow Lake.
Harry Akkerman was born October 20, 1895, at Ashton, IA the son of Berend and Ella Akkerman.
He served in the US Army during World War I. On June 19, 1935, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Fiekens at Monroe, SD. They farmed in the Willow Lake community, and recently moved to their home in Willow Lake.
Mr. Akkerman was a member of the Johnnie fonken American legion Post 113. he was also a member of the Presbyterian Church and served as a Sunday School teacher.
Survivors are his wife Elizabeth of Willow Lake, two sisters, Mrs. Anne Gerken and Mrs. Jennie Hilton both of Sioux Falls,a brother; Mike Akkerman of Sioux Falls and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 5 brothers and asister. Serving as pallbearers will be Gary Akkerman, Larry Akkerman, Elwood Gronewold, Roger Fiekens, Alfred Boysen and Glen Hassebrock.
