6th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry
6th Infantry Regiment was ordered from Columbia, South Carolina, to Richmond, Virginia, on July 10, 1861. The men were from the counties of Fairfield, Chester, York, Darlington, Lancaster, and Lexinton. It was engaged at Dranesville <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va007.htm> under J.E.B. Stuart, then was brigaded under Generals R.H. Anderson, M. Jenkins, and Bratton. The 6th fought with the army from Williamsburg <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va010.htm> to Fredericksburg <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va028.htm>, served with Longstreet at Suffolk <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va031.htm>, and later moved with D.H. Hill to North Carolina. Again with Longstreet, it did not arrive in time to take part in the Battle of Chickamauga but was engaged at Knoxville. Returning to Virginia, it participated in the conflicts at The Wilderness <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va046.htm>, Spotsylvania <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va048.htm>, and Cold Harbor <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va062.htm>, endured the hardships of the Petersburg <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va063.htm> trenches, and saw action around Appomattox <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va097.htm>. The regiment reported 18 killed and 45 wounded at Dranesville and in April, 1862, contained 550 officers and men. It lost 27 at Williamsburg <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va010.htm> and fifty-two percent of the 521 at Seven Pines <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va014.htm>, then sustained 100 casualties at Gaines' Mill <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va017.htm> and Frayser's Farm, 115 at Second Manassas <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va026.htm>, 58 during the Maryland Campaign, and 16 at Wauhatchie. In 1864 the unit lost 9 killed and 85 wounded during Wilderness <http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/battles/va046.htm> Campaign, and from June 13 to December 31, there were 26 killed, 176 wounded, and 16 missing. On Apirl 9, 1865, it surrendered 30 officers and 328 men. The field officers were Colonels John Bratton, John M. Steedman, and Charles S. Winder; Lieutenant Colonels Andrew J. Secrest and John M. White; and Majors James L. Coker, Edward C. McLure, and Thomas W. Woodward.

4. Captain William McALILEY (13 May 1830 Chester Co SC - 27 Aug 1899 Chester Co SC) married Mary Rebecca WALLACE (28 May 1842 SC - 3 Dec 1903 Chester Co SC) on 23 Jan 1866 and had at least seven children. He served as a Captain in Co I, Reg 16 of the SC Volunteers during the Civil War. Mary transferred her membership to the Purity Presbyterian Church in 1875 from the Harmony Presbyterian Church. Her father was Alexander Stuart WALLACE. They are buried in the Old Purity Cemetery.

William enlisted in the Chester Blues and due to his survival and the death of some of his superiors ended the last year of the War Between the States, rising to the rank of Captain commanding a company. Before and after the was he farmed his family's land outside of Chester, SC. He initially served in Company F, which due to reorganizations ultimately became Company I, 16th Regiment 16 of the South Carolina Volunteers. The extent of his education was limited by financial and other circumstance, but all of his children became college graduates, including two sons who were doctors.

    William McAliley, was the son of James and Sarah Dunn Ross McAliley, both also buried in Old Purity Cemetery, and was a thirty year old Chester District farmer who had yet to marry at the time of the War Between the States. William enlisted in the Chester Blues, ultimately designated Company F, 6th Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers of the Confederate forces rising from corporal to lowest ranking sergeant, "Fifth Sergeant" and ultimately to a captain commanding Company I. William was wounded twice, once being at the battle at Dranesville, Virginia being shot through the hand after taking the colors from the wounded color bearer. Company Commander Obadiah Harden of Company E was informed of the need to assign another color bearer, but instead picked them up himself and went forward only to be the third bearing these colors to be shot and in his case Captain Harden fell mortally wounded.

    Fate was harsh with Capt. McAliley, as it was with all who fought through to the end, but not so harsh that peace wound not allow him to seek better times. Returning to his home in Chester District after the surrender at Appomatox Court House, there are no records of all the difficulties that would be faced by him, who like all the individuals and particularly the heads of families in the South were challenged just to survive. By the beginning of the following year, Captain McAliley was preparing to marry.

    The year after the war ended, on 23 January 1866, William and Mary Rebecca Wallace of the Turkey Creek area of York District, South Carolina were married, probably at the home of the bride. Her father Alexander Stuart Wallace, and his uncle Samuel McAliley had served together as Unionist legislators from the two adjoining Piedmont counties. It is presumed that through her father and State Sen. Samuel McAliley's auspices that the couple were introduced.

    William and Mary Rebecca were the parents of seven children, five sons and two daughters.
