    Samuel [Wylie] McAliley
    Birth: Nov. 4, 1799
    Chester County
    South Carolina, USA
    Death: Apr. 9, 1880
    Chester County
    South Carolina, USA

Samuel McAliley was one of four sons of William McAliley who was one of five sons of John McAliley. Although it appears Samuel only once used a middle name or initial in all the many records bearing his name, Samuel recognized that his full name was Samuel Wylie McAliley, having been named for his mother's brother Samuel Wylie who died in the doorway of his parent's home at age nineteen treacherously shot by one or more Tories of the district. Samuel also had a nephew who was named by his brother James, possibly for both Samuel Wylies but most probably more in recognition of that uncle's loss at so young an age, and childless possibly, in the war for independence.

Samuel was educated at South Carolina College during the 1820's and was recorded advertising to tutor students in mathematics in Columbia. Samuel read the law with an unknown lawyer and became a highly successful lawyer and a unique SC politician.

Early on during the 1830's it was anything but unique to be against secession if you lived in upcountry and this opinion remained until after the election of that supposed enemy A. Lincoln when even a small majority of those in upcountry were prepared to secede by the time of the vote for delegates.

Prior to that vote State Sen. Samuel McAliley was recorded as the only dissenting vote against even calling such a convention to consider secession. Others may have caved in to the fire breathers but Samuel held true to this part of his platform for every campaign until the actual vote of secession was had.

Samuel, like many of the older assemblymen, remained in the state assembly throughout the war, for in his sixties that was how best Samuel could serve his country. Samuel had three children by his wife and each will be posted as time allows and more will be added to this short biography.

It might be of interest to note that after the end of the war, Samuel's name, despite his advanced age, was included on the short list of those for whom the federal authorities should consider for appointment as governor. Thus the man was well-thought of, and there could be no official in the state with a more pristine, vibrant and well-known record against secession and pro Union, in the years and the days prior to secession. No appointment occurred and has shown above Samuel lived another decade or more with little political involvement with the exception of an aborted campaign for U.S. Congressman in 1868 (again Samuel appears to be eligible despite his service in the Confederacy and SC State Senator during the war years, primarily because Samuel was too old to have taken up arms against the Union), which seems to have ceased in favor of another former state assemblyman, the father-in-law of his nephew, Capt. (CSA) William McAliley, a much younger man but who was another former, prior to the war, Unionist politician from the neighboring county.
