James was a member of Purity Presbyterian Church and was a store owner and farmer. At his death he was financially land-poor and his widow was assisted by her brother-in-law Samuel, a lawyer and knowledgeable in such estate difficulties to keep her home and a small part of the farm during the estate administration.

James and Sarahand her parents are buried in the Old Purity PresbyterianCemetery in Chester SC. Two of their children died as infantsand are buried in the Old Purity Cemetery.1. Hugh Ross McALILEY (18 Oct 1820 Chester Co SC - 30 Aug 1844Chester Co SC) is buried in the Old Purity Cemetery.2. Mary Wylie McALILEY (cir.1825 Chester Co SC - ) marriedJohn B. They were in Pickens CoAL for awhile. There was an Archibald HOOD (3 Apr 1797Kershaw Dist SC - 24 Mar 1871 Bridgeville AL) who moved toPickens Co AL in 1832 who left a wife and eight childrenwhen he died. Relationship between the two families has notbeen established.
