6 654 654 Hafner T. C. 3/12 M W . . S. Carolina . . . . .Please note the below was written by me nearly two decades ago and there is additional information now known. Furthermore twentieth century descendants are omitted for privacy reasons.Hugh Ross was the eldest son of Hugh and Elizabeth Brown Ross of Chester County, South Carolina. Hugh, born c. 1763, evidently accompanied his parents and siblings to America in 1772, since on November 19 of that year a petition signed by the elder Hugh Ross was granted by the Governor of the Province of South Carolina for the award of 400 acres of land "on the Bounty", which phrase implied that the family were Protestants who immigrated on the encouragement of a certain 1761 Act promulgated for that very purpose. The date of marriage of Hugh Ross to Margaret Wylie is not revealed by the public record. Hugh Ross died without will but some information on his estate administration is found in the estate records of Camden District However, in the deed records for Chester County is found a deed executed on November 1, 1797 by William Bradford and his wife Sarah, William Nelson and his wife Mary, Hugh Ross and his wife Margaret and Elizabeth Wylie conveying to Joseph Morrow (husband of a daughter of Hugh and Margaret Wylie Ross) certain land which was originally granted to the four women's now deceased father William Wylie and, as is indicated in the deed, descending to the four women as his heirs. (It is interesting to note that while the three husbands were each able to sign their names, the four women each utilized a mark in lieu of a signature.)Furthermore, the 1790 census enumerates only two women with the four men and one boy in the household of Elizabeth Ross (the senior Hugh Ross having died in the 1780's). The women were apparently Elizabeth and her daughter Elizabeth, the boy was her youngest son Francis and the men were most probably her sons Hugh, William and Abraham Ross and their half-brother James Brown. Thus it is quite likely that Hugh and Margaret married some time between 1790 and November 1, 1797.Hugh Ross and his wife Margaret had three daughters and four sons: Hugh Ross, Jr. (upon the death of the first Hugh his father and then the birth of his son, this Hugh assumed the title Senior) who was born c. 1797, Sarah Dunn Ross born March 20, 1800, and Jane, James Brown, William Wylie, Elizabeth and John Ross. It is noted that all the children except John were named either for their parents or a close relative of their parents. (Jane and James Brown were, most likely, the half-sister and half-brother of Hugh Ross, Elizabeth was the name of the mother and sister of Hugh, and Sarah and William Wylie were the names of the sister and father of Margaret Ross. In fact it would seem quite possible, and now some twenty years later it is most probable, that Sarah Dunn was the maiden name of Margaret Ross' mother.)Hugh Ross, together with Capt. John Kennedy, John Douglas, John Walker and George Kennedy, was a member of an appointed committee which was in charge of the erection of a stone wall "one hundred feet square and four feet high to be built around the present burying ground at Purity Meeting House." On January 12, 1813 ninety-one subscribers including Hugh Ross, William Ross, Abram Ross (presumably our Hugh and his brothers), William White (his half-sister's husband), John Walker (his niece's husband) and James McAliley (his daughter Sarah's future husband), agreed to pay for that structure at what is now known as Old Purity Presbyterian Cemetery.Hugh Ross died on April 3, 1851 and his wife Margaret died on October 22, 1853 at the respective ages of 88 years and 79 years. His will names his wife and his surviving children Sarah McAliley, Elizabeth Kennedy, Jane Wiley (or perhaps Wylie), James B. Ross, and John Ross since only his namesake Hugh, Jr., who died on October 30, 1825 and was buried in Old Purity, did not survive him. Nothing further is now known about his daughter Jane. It is believed that Hugh Ross, Jr. had no children who lived to adulthood.Sarah Dunn Ross married James McAliley, who was the eldest of the third generation of that family in Chester, c. 1818. Their children were Hugh Ross (who died as a young man), Mary (who married John B. Stokes and had children), Margaret Ross (who married Archibald Hood, but was childless) William (who married Mary Rebecca Wallace of Yorkville by whom he had five sons and two daughters), Elizabeth Caroline (who died as a child), James (who married Margaret Bryant and had three sons and a daughter in York County), Samuel Wylie (who settled in Pickens County, Alabama and died leaving descendants) and Sarah Jane McAliley (who died as a young woman).Brown Ross (as James Brown Ross was known) married Sarah Johnston and according to a record of Mrs. James P. (Nannie McAliley) Walker had children including Ollie, Margaret, Nannie, Hugh, George and Jane Barclay Ross. Of these children, further information is only known about Jane Barclay Ross, who was born January 28, 1850 and died July 17, 1892 and was buried at Old Purity Cemetery. John Ross, brother of Brown, is known to have married Olive Lee Thorn.Elizabeth Ross married Robert Kennedy and their children included John, James, Robert (who died as a Confederate soldier), John, Alexander, and Margaret W. Kennedy. William Wylie Ross married Malinda Walker, daughter of William and Annes Walker, by whom he had John (who married Nancy Shannon), Madison (who married Sue Moore, then Lydia Moore), Alex (who married twice leaving descendants by both marriages), and Mary who married Joe Smyre and left at least one child). Martha Boyd, born January 14, 1819 the daughter of Charles and Ellen Boyd, was the second wife of William Wylie Ross. William Wylie Ross (born July 1, 1806, died October 3, 1876), Malinda Walker Ross, his first wife (born November 24, 1811, died October 12, 1844) and Martha Boyd, his second wife (who died June 10, 1859), are buried together at Old Purity Cemetery.
