William Wylie, born July 13, 1813, in South Carolina, died March 6, 1881, and is buried at Pine Grove beside his second wife, M. Evaline E. (Ross) Bullock Wylie. Evaline was the widow of William H. Bullock before her marriage to William Wylie, who had been previously married to Caroline Amelia Ross.
William Wylie’s children by his first wife, Caroline Amelia, were: Elizabeth Virginia, who married Edd Vanway; Tabitha Jane, who married, first, Robert R. Ross and, second Samuel Hays Lowrie; Sarah, who married Gus Furlow; William Ross, father of Eddie and Frank; Adam Morrow, son of Alfred Rucker Wylie, who married ?diana Wherry; Octavo Josephine, who died very young; Francis McCoy "Bud", who married Mattie Smith and is buried at Bridges Cemetery; and Caroline Evaline, who married an Oliphant and had two children.
William Wylie’s children by his second wife, Evaline, were: John Erwin, who was killed in a horse-operated gin; Samuel Russell, who died young; Martha Ann, who married Jim Smith (brother to the wife of Frances McCoy Wylie); Joseph Birdwell, who married Zellie Gossett; George Elbert, who married Carrie Still, step-daughter of John Eddy Smith; and Samantha Jane, who married Tobe Smith, brother of Jim Smith.
William Wylie and John Wylie (1809-1848) were brothers. William Wylie (Uncle Billy) was one of the first settlers here. He rode a mule into Texas and brought a packsaddle mule and a little Negro boy whose name was Harrison. Harrison married later, and Grandpa Wylie built him a little house upon a hill near his home place. This is called Harrison Hill. William Wylie had a team of oxen which he drove to Pine Grove, where he helped hew out logs to build Pine Grove Church. Some of these logs are still a part of the church building.
Grandpa’s old log house still stands in the Chapman Community between Pine Hill and Chapman on the Joe Wylie place.
