    In juni 1917 is sprake van een bezwaarschrift betreffende Arend Nijborg. De burgemeester deelt mede dat hij behoort tot de landstormjaarklasse 1912 en voorheen landarbeider was en gemiddeld 14 gulden per week verdiende, welk bedrag het gezin geheel ten goede kwam. Arend zou voor zijn levensonderhoud het gezin gemiddeld 3 gulden per week kosten. Het gezin bestaat dan uit zijn vrouw (22 jaar), twee zonen (2 jaar) en een dochter (1 maand), allen zonder beroep en geldelijke verdiensten en heeft verder ook geen inkomsten. Ze hebben 3/4 hectare bouwland in gebruik en geen vee. Huishuur en fondsengeld wordt door hen niet betaald. Op grond hiervan wordt voorgesteld de vergoeding aan het gezin van de
    dienstplichtige te brengen op 1,55 gulden per dag, zulks met het oog op de steeds duurder wordende levensmiddelen (Brief burgemeester Römelingh, Anloo 21 juni 1917, nr.136).
    In februari 1918 aan het eind van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, tekent hij samen met zijn vader en andere arbeiders uit Annen een petitie om in het kader van de distributiemaatregelen een groter rantsoen spek en vet van de gemeente Anloo te ontvangen.
    In november 1920 weigert Arend, als arbeider inwonend in de boerderij De Hullen 1 te Annen, de hem opgelegde boete van 10 gulden te betalen voor het verbreken van de zegel van de aansluitkast elektriciteit. Er wordt gedreigd met het afsluiten van de toevoer van elektriciteit als de boete niet tijdig wordt betaald (Brieven directeur nutsbedrijf te Groningen aan B & W
    Anloo, 9 november 1920, nr. 38 en 29 december 1920, nr. 39).
    Arend is communistisch georiënteerd en werd samen met zijn zoon Roelof Nijborg in de gaten gehouden door de Binnenlandse Veiligheidsdienst (BVD) en haar voorgangers. Op 22 september 1935 neemt Arend deel aan een door de CPN georganiseerd volkscongres in Amsterdam, waarbij hij namens een boerencomité als penningmeester in het landelijk bureau functioneert (Algemeen Rijksarchief, toegangsnr. 2.04.53.21, in. nr 19).
    Hij roept in die woelige jaren in zijn woonplaats Annen als kleine boer op om te gaan staken om de landbouwcrisis en rmoede te bestrijden (zie: S.
