Notes about Janzse B SCHOLTEN

Janze used a variety of names after she emigrated to the US. Her nick name was Jans, so the census records are a bit confusing. She is also listed as "Jane" on marriage record and Jane in the 1910 census. Also listed as Jans and Jennie! Her fiance's uncle came with her on the ship. Jan and Jans were married in Orange City by Reverend Bolks a few years later.
Janze was blinded in her later years after she caught the infuenza (Grip) while visiting relatives in Chicago. Her husband died in midlife, leaving Janse to raise her many children. Her eldest daughter Arendina died in her early twenties from typhoid fever, and was Jantje's primary care giver. She continued to live in Alton, IA and is listed in the 1925 Iowa census as living alone at age 75.

Four children survive their mother as follows: William Vrymoet of Belvidiere, SD, Ben Vrymoet of Hayward SD, Mrs Ben Lenssen of Litchville, ND and Mrs Bert Eggink of Chandler, Minn.

Jennie Scholten was born May 20 1850 in the Netherlands and came with her parents to America in 1870. The family lived in Chicago for five years and in the fall of 1875, came to Sioux County. She was married the same year to Johannes Vrymoet. Dena, the eldest died at the age of 22, and Mrs Menko Mulder, another daughter, passed on six years ago. Two other children, a boy and a girl died in early childhood. Besides her children, Mrs Vrymoet is survived by her brother, G.J. Scholten of Corsica, S.D., and by her companion of the past 14 years, Mrs A Eggink. Mr. Vrymoet died 30 years ago in 1899. There are 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. For the past 38 years since Mrs Vrymoet had a severe illness, she has been totally blind. By many, she was known only as the blind lady. Despite her handicap, she carried on with great cheerfulness. She attended church regularly and was deeply religious. Mr Scholten of Corsica arrived Saturday when informed of his sister’s illness, and all the children are here. Other friends and relatives are expected for the funeral Friday.
The pioneer mother was a woman of sterling character and high principals who will be sadly missed by her family and great host of friends. The Democrat joins in extending deep sympathy to the bereaved family in the loss of their mother
