Notes about Gerrit Jan SCHOLTEN

Gerrit emigrated to the US with his family when he was nearly five years old. He grew up in Chicago and lived in Chicago during the second great Chicago fire. Later he moved with his family to Iowa. He married Hattie Fredericks, also a Hollander who started out in Chicago and moved to the same part of Iowa as did the Scholtens, at about the same time. Later, they moved to Grandview, South Dakota. Gerrit out-lived two of his children, the first was my Great Uncle Art Scholten, who taught speech at New York University. The second was my grandfather, Willem Karel, who died of a heart attack at about the age of 52. He is pictured with his daughter -in-law in the late 1940's. Garrit died in 1951, in Corsica SD.

When Gerrit became elderly, he would walk into town from the farm, which by that time, was farmed by his son Fred. Gerrit did not spend much time with his youngest grandson, Floyd, who by that time was fatherless.
