Notes about William Karel SCHOLTEN

William was a carpenter. He had in his duffel bag, now in possession of grandkids, plans for a home he was building along with the financial record of the project. William was described by his son as an intelligent, heavy set man with a strong work ethic and feisty temper. He spent his life as a carpenter, and upon moving to Washington, was involved in Defense Work at the time of WWI. He also was on the crew that built one of the Detainment Camps in Washington. When we questioned Marvin Scholten about this, he said, that in hind sight, this was a terrible thing. A the time, people thought it was the right thing to do. People were very fearful. About twenty years earlier, served in WWI in France in the Alcase Lorraine area. His original records are retained by his daughter Kathleen, and much of the war memorabilia was given to his grandson William Scholten by Jennie in the 1960's.

Except from letter home, Nov 21st 1918:
Dear Folks,
Received your letter of September 20th the other day. I am in the best of health. This is the first opportunity I have had to write this month, and even if I had written, I would not have had a chance to mail them. The greatest thing has come to pass and has gladdened the hearts of millions of people, but we realize that there will be many sad homes when this is all straightened out. I have much to be thankful for that I am among the living. Have spent many an hour that I have thought would be the last. But I escaped without a scratch. Virgil O'Brian, Ed Nydam and James E Scholten were slightly wounded. I am told that they were able to walk back. so they were not wounded seriously. They were hit by shrapnel. There was lots of that flying around. We are all wondering when we are going home. ... at present we are billeted in a village. My quarters are quite airy, no doors or windows in it any more, and there is a big shell hole in the ceiling so we almost get cold fingers when writing....Your son and brother, Mechanic William K Scholten, CO A Machine Gun Bn.
